lance armstrong shows what a class guy he is - 1999/01/24 00:08 by giving the $465,000 for winning the tour de france to his teammates and staff. now just how many athletes would do as lance did whether or not they
NEEDED the money? i dare say hardly any if anyone at all. major kudos to lance for rewarding your team.

re:lance armstrong shows what a class guy he is - 1999/01/25 03:07 but if a "non-athlete" can make it than surely a fit cyclist can ... imagine the money you could make coming in as a rookie and hitting say 400!!

and how is Edgar not an athlete?? Are all baseball players not athletes or just Edgar?? Does hitting a 90mph fast ball out of the park or chucking a ball from center field to home plate and accurately hit your target require
NO athletic skill?? He has the reflexes to hit 300 ... if his physical abilities cannot justify his salary than how about his "draw"?? Is he part of the reason people are paying big bucks to fill the stands?? If in fact he does neither than the "contract" he negotiated was good since it was not performance based and not based on injury ... you seem mad that this will
NEVER be the case in cycling ... at least here not in the USA!

re:lance armstrong shows what a class guy he is - 1999/01/25 06:49 I disagree. I think that newbies can, and should, post questions. What I find amazing is when a newbie OR an oldie doesn't post a question but rather a conclusion before doing his (or her) homework. This applies whether the topic is bicycle racing or the economy or Iraq or the origins of the human species.

As for getting ripped, the ripping the OP is getting is pretty mild by rbr standards. And, consistent with the above, the mild amount of ripping he's getting is because he didn't do his homework.

re:lance armstrong shows what a class guy he is - 1999/01/26 01:24 Not to diminish your admiration for Lance but that is standard procedure among teams. The winner usually is paid a very high salary anyway plus there is quite often a bonus for winning built into his contract.

re:lance armstrong shows what a class guy he is - 1999/01/26 02:35 I can't do that, son, you're wealth of ignorance on the subject of return on investment in athletics is glaring. That you can't see the glare indicates the presence of (1) pair of rose colored glasses.

re:lance armstrong shows what a class guy he is - 1999/01/26 07:13 I read somewhere (USA Today?) that LANCE got a $3,500,000 bonus from USPS for winning his fifth TdF.

Kinda takes the sting out of writing that $465,000 check...

Net (USPS) bonus $3,035,000.00

Bobke: A Ride on the Wild Side of Cycling
Published in Paperback by Velo Press (1995)
Author: Bob Roll
Amazon base price: $16.95

"Rode the Tour de France with Lemond. The Giro with Andy Hampsten.
Helped Andy win the Giro d'Italia in probably the most epic stage ever of any Grand Tour when Hampsten claims the lead of the race in a freak snowstorm over the tallest mountains in Italy, aided by his trusty leftenant-one certain Bob Roll-who brought warm drink and clothing up to his leader to assist him win the stage and the Giro. (Many riders crawled off their bikes, weeping in pain and the knowledge they would never even finish the stage, much less the race. ) Not so Mr. Roll-- in helping his teammate win, Mr. Roll of course suffered hypothermia, frostbite, and literally had to have his heart jumped when the freezing temperatures plummeted his pulse to a mere 20 or 30 beats per minute.
Oh yeah, he was also the person Lance Armstrong called when, during his comeback post-cancer, Lance wanted a good training partner and colleague to go to Boone, North Carolina to exorcise his demons and return to the bike...."

re:lance armstrong shows what a class guy he is - 1999/01/26 21:55 I suspect (with no proof) that there are a lot of current football players who are fatter than those 43 years ago. That said, the players are also taller and _much_ quicker than their counterparts of 40+ years ago.
Additionally, players from 1960 frequently had to work offseason jobs to support their families (and the season was 2/3 as long).

re:lance armstrong shows what a class guy he is - 1999/01/27 00:59 It's SOP for the winner to give his money to the rest of the team. What's not usual is that Armstrong kicks in another 400000 of his own to his teammates. Of course what's also not usual is how much he makes in endorsements, commercials, etc thanks to his TdF wins (and thus his teammates).

The French govt even tried to tax Lance on his winnings, saying the fact that he decided to give it away didn't not relieve him of the tax burden.
They viewed it as a work related source of income- thus taxable.

re:lance armstrong shows what a class guy he is - 1999/01/27 09:21 You said "tactics". I have no disagreement with the "training, motivation, physiology" aspects. In racing terms, I'd say the long distance runner is closest to the time-triallist rather than the mass start road racer.
