    Is a short stem bad?

When I bought my road bike I had a fitting session, and got a 10cm stem. Even after a season of riding,
I felt too low and stretched out, so I replaced it with a tall 8cm Nitto stem. Much more comfortable.

But I wonder if there are any bad side effects from using such a short stem? This is my first bike.

Maybe a question of leverage, i.e., a longer stem (up to a point) might provide more movement for a smaller turn, but then again, I am no physicist!!

Sounds like you've put the kind of thought into the product that I'd appreciate. I'll keep that in mind when I get to the point where the budget will permit the expense.

Use what fits you best. A real short stem can make steering sluggish, but if you have to decide if that's a problem.
