New vs old style frames
Ok I had an Atala that I bought in 72 with lugged Columbus DB frame and Campy equipped (shifters). I loved the stiffness and comfy ride. Note I said had. Last week it was ripped off out of my back yard! Dummy me, I always locked it up except this time. I just upgraded with Ultgra 6500 chainwheel, side pull brakes and newer derailers. I either have to upgrade to the newer style bikes or build up another. My question is are the newer carbon frames that much greater and lighter? Now just because you bought a $3 - 5 thousand dollar bike, please don't answer to justify you spending that much. If you had a steel frame as described and now have a "upgraded" bike, please be honest. Bike magazines hype up new products (first generation alum frames)like they did in the early 80s. I don't see many of them anymore. Thanks

Tony, The newer frame designs have a lot of fancy shock absorbing bends in the stays and forks. You can spend a terrible amount of money and get a frame a little lighter, but can you justify it if you arn't racing? I tend to be a little fanatical about weighing components and frames and my 80s era Centurion Comp T/A (54cm) weighs 1920 Grams while my Carbon/Aluminum frame is 2028 grams. Go Figure! I suggest you find a proper sized older Cromoly frame and save the big bucks for nice components and wheels.
Good luck and have fun.

Thanks, I looked on Craigslist and found nothing but junk. I now have a Fuji but the frame is too small, but will do for now. I had to extend the seat post up to the max!
