re:Bikes For Fat People - 2002/08/27 13:35 There are a few manufacturers of solid tires and solid inner tubes.
Here are some links:

http://www.nomorflats.com (solid inner tubes)
http://www.ameritire.com/ (solid tires)
http://www.greentyre.com/english/index.html (solid tires)

I have used the No-Mor flats solid inner tubes (first link), so I can give you some info on them if you want. I don't have any experience with the other products.

re:Bikes For Fat People - 2002/08/27 13:41 Cane Creek Thudbuster allows you to swap elastomers for different weights, and it allows me (210 lbs) to use blue; I think that's medium, I know there's one or two heavier elastomers you can use.

So, a Thudbuster is probably OK for a heavy rider.

If you use too-soft elastomer, the elastomer WILL shatter. Follow the instructions...

re:Bikes For Fat People - 2002/08/27 21:35 A quality mountain bike should be perfect. It's a bit like loading it up with panniers full of food, clothes, tools, spares, water, tent and sleeping bag.

But I'd strongly recommend a good suspension seat post (to protect bike and rider alike).

re:Bikes For Fat People - 2002/08/28 00:16 Heavy weight suspension seatposts may be hard. Many are limited to 180 lb riders; others 225, 240. There are a few which can take more, but at
230 my selection is limited. I think I have seen some rated for 350 lb riders, but suspension seatpost are designed for lighter riders.

re:Bikes For Fat People - 2002/08/28 02:30 How fat? What kind of riding do you plan on doing? I know some pretty big guys (football players, etc.) who ride normal road bikes with no problems.

Re:Bikes For Fat People - 2009/06/19 18:51 Hey Jittos, hope that your bike search is going well. You're right that it's really important to find a bike that supports you comfortably.

You could always try checking out www.supersizedbikes.com. The founder, Joan Denizot, started the company because she couldn't find bikes that supported people who weighed more than 225 pounds.

Her idea was to make a bike for big people so they could ride comfortably without having to walk into a store to buy one, only to be intimidated out of getting one and riding.

Her web site has the store for bikes and gear, but she's got information for new, plus-sized bikers, too. Just thought I'd pass it on!
