Which Front Derailleur?

cyclocross / hybrid front derailleurs - 2008/09/16 07:38 After running my 'cross bike for a few years with my old road group on it (7700) I finally upgraded to 10 speed, 7800 my only problem is with the front derailleur.
The bike is built for a top pull front derailleur and the mountain bike derailleur I have been using is designed for 9 speed making the cage too wide to shift the narrower chain accurately.
I have squashed the cage into a more svelte profile but I'm not really satisfied.

Has anyone seen a good fix for this that doesn't involve a cable pulley on the back of the seat tube?
Does anyone make a 10 speed, top pull, front derailleur?
Has anyone swapped either cages or cable-pull levers between a mtbike dual-pull front derailleur and a road front derailleur?

Any help is greatly appreciated

cyclocross / hybrid front derailleurs - 2009/03/24 08:55 Scotty,

I may have something that could help you out. It's a German cycle shop called speen. they make very simple yet highly effective non-pulley adapters, called umlenkers, for converting bottom pull mechs to top pull. check them out here:

http://www.speen.de/speen*_en/products.html

BTW, Sorry to burst in on your thread but I'm having an issue you might have some insight into. Unfortunately the Umlenkers don't work with triple cranks. I'm converting my hybrid trek soho into more of a road bike. Just insalled a 7703 9 speed triple crank (53/39/30) with 105 STI shifters, and an ultegra 9 cassete in rear. But Im having trouble finding a suitable top pull 9 speed front mech.. What were you using? Right now I'm seriously considering ordering a fd-7703 mech. and hooking it up to a superfly cycles enduro CX pulley. Problem is the chainstay angle on my bike is > 66 degrees.

Thanks,

D

cyclocross / hybrid front derailleurs - 2009/09/26 00:49 Which derailleur did you end up using? I have a 2007 Soho that I too am looking to convert into more of a road bike. I ordered the same crank. Excuse my ignorance on this, but any reason why I couldn't use a bottom pull derailleur with a click like this: http://harriscyclery.net/product/problem-solvers-07-backstop-1-3-8-two-cable-with-slots-sku-br5456- qc49.htm

Re:cyclocross / hybrid front derailleurs - 2009/11/13 21:10 A big "Thanks!" to daehnomel for his advice when I started this project a while back.

For anyone wanting or trying to convert their Trek Soho to a triple crank (27 speed) it really is quite easy. All that is needed is a matching x7 shifter (or any shifter would work), a derailleur (34.9) that matches the height of the biggest ring on the new crank, new triple/double crankset, shift cable, shift cable housing, and a clamp on cable stop (34.9). I sourced my parts off of eBay and spent about $175 for the conversion but I made back some of my money by selling the single crank. So in the end my swap was $100.

I chose to route my lines in the stock locations to make the swap look as stock as possible. I know daehnomel opted for a top pull derailleur and ran his new line across the top frame. In my case it shifts wonderfully and it works perfectly.

Enough blabbing here are some pictures:
