I need to get rid of my chainset sometime soon (c.f. previous threads, worn rings, bolts, ruined thread), and I was considering putting the 2003 XTR set on.

re:Shimano RSX -- convert to triple?

I'm considering a used bike with Shimano RSX. I think it's 2-3 years old. I don't know if the rear is 7 or 8 speed, but the front is a double and I need a triple.

What would I need to convert it, besides the new crank? A bottom bracket? New derailer(s)? Is the left shifter compatible (if not, I guess that would be the dealbreaker)

Splined BB To Work With Phil Wood Lock Rings?

I have recently been using a Shimano UN-72 BB with some Phil Wood lock rings with some success. While I doubt the UN-72 will prove as solid a performer as the Phil unit, it could be had for very few $ and seemed worth the experiment.
I only had to remove the "fixed cup" and I was ready to go.

Replying to my own post...

I've done a lot more research (also with the various online cogset calculators) and I'm wondering if it wouldn't be the most cost effective idea to put a 50x34 in front and (if I can find it) a 12-26
8 speed at the back, in this way I won't have to change derailleurs or shifters and will have plenty of low end for those long, steep climbs.

STI shifters don't work with an XT front derailleur. Does anyone have experience with an Ultegra or Dura-Ace front triple derailleur with this crankset? I would like to keep the precision shifting I have now with the
Ultegra triple crankset.
