Anybody know an improvised way to push on a fork crown race onto the fork and push on a headset cup onto the frame without the expensive tools, i.e. using regular tools. Hammering with rubber mallets etc. can damage the parts, if Aluminum etc.

Where can I get replacement cartridge bearings for Shimano 600 headsets?
We're talking $40/pair and a special order from most shops. I can get a whole new headset mail-order for less, but it's still about $40. That seems a little excessive for two bearings.
