Instead of getting a new road bike this fall I am getting myself a kick bum pair of wheels built up for my current road bike. I am looking for recommendations on hubs and I consider the desired traits I value the same as I do for mountain wheels. In my view here are my qualifications in order:

1. smoothness of the bearings
2. durability of the hub overall
3. strength of the axel
4. light weight

re:Threaded versus threadless headset

What's the advantage of a threadless headset over an oldfashioned threaded one? Is the threaded one stiffer/lighter? Would it improve my riding in any way going from threaded to threadless?

re:Can't tighten headset

When I do the "headset tightness check" (hold front brake and rock bike forward and back) I feel play in the headset. I've tightened the top cap down as much as I can (without stripping the threads) while pushing all the bits down on the steerer tube, but I can't get rid of the play. What else can I try?

Specs: Cane Creek S2 headset, Lightspeed Tuscany road frame,
Lightspeed carbon (disc) fork

Though I've been critical of Grant Peterson's effort to revive centerpull brakes, I have to admit that the latest Rivendell Reader (#30) gave me reasons to pause.
