re:Compact crankset versus triple In category Racing Written by PhishyPhil420 I live in the San Francisco East Bay where it is very hilly I have just ordered a new bike frame that should arrive next week. I the meantime, I need to decide on my crankset. I am installing a 200 Campy Chorus Triple Gruppo and am considering using the FSA Pro Elit Compact crankset (50/34) instead of the Chorus triple (52/42/30?). I a looking for other members' experiences and recommendations re
re:Orbea Orca - Good, bad? In category Racing Written by caseyjones225 I'm thinking about getting an Orca. Does anyone know anything about them, ie, ridden one or know someone who has? Thanks.
Bianchi are appaling and last 365 days In category Racing Written by sprattelgubbe Please read the information below and make your own conclusion as to why you must never buy a frame from Bianchi! Would Bianchi still act in this way if the defects had resulted in personal injury? Dear Sir, On 1 December 2001 I purchased a Bianchi Boron Frame Size 58 cm from Van Herwerden Wielersport in the Netherlands. I have used this frame during the Summer months (March to October) resultin
re:Say it aint so Shimano ... PART 2 In category Tech issues Written by travelernj Looks to me Japan-style price deflation is taking down prices of engineered bicycle components everywhere. Shimano isn't the only component-maker trying to prop up prices to stay alive. See the recent notice from Chris King, listed below, for another desperate attempt to maintain prices in the market channel. Perhaps new Chinese components will be hitting the USA mainland soon ?? - Don Gillies
re:Handlebar Failure In category Tech issues Written by hrd2hndle The last club ride I went on was about three months ago. I was worried about wether I'd be on form to keep up but fortunately I did alright. That is, until on our way back *this* happened: http://www.btinternet.com/~asqui/pub/Bars/ The worst part (given that I didn't fall off or get run over) is that I spent £7 and an hour or two changing the bar tape... *yesterday* The handlebar tubing sheare
re:Alternate and simpler measurement of power output? In category Tech issues Written by MeatHed Assume measurement of power output is a useful aid to training. Assume an ergo (simple supported bike frame, fixed wind resistant panels attached to the spokes of a driven wheel, with a conventional derailleur of x selectable gears and the ability to measure cadence ). Wouldn't the various gear and cadence combinations possible for any rider give distinct differential power outputs ? I apprecia
re:Front blowout In category Tech issues Written by abbsci420 Last week a friend was following me at about 30 mph down a gentle hill on our road bikes, when I heard the sounds of a blowout and a crashing bike behind me. When I went back to check, I found him on the ground, out cold, breathing heavily and bleeding from the mouth. It was evident that he had hit the asphalt pavement hard with the left rear of his head. His helmet appears to have taken much of t
re:Relaxed Seat Tube Angles and KOPS In category Tech issues Written by jersey I was reading Keith Bontrager's article about KOPS being a myth (http://www.bontrager.com/keith/rants.asp?id=12 ) and started thinking about bikes like the Lemonds with a relax seat tube angle. If you get a Lemond and adjust the seat so your knee is directly over the pedal axel at 3 o'clock, wouldn't you be negating the relaxed seat tube angle? The top of the seat tube my be further back, but if
re:Tools to build bike In category Tech issues Written by graa I'm planning to build up a bike frame, and am wondering if people could recommend a tool set that has all the necessary items for this task. There seem to be a few out there on the market, which presumably are of varying quality and completeness. I have minor repair tools around the house (i.e., chain tool, allen wrenches, etc.) but need quite a bit more. Thanks for the advice - Nom Sahiro
re:Taping the frame In category Tech issues Written by ccrider This might sound strange. I would like to wrap my bike frame with any non-sticky tapes in order to make the look of the bike uglier. I wanna do that while touring in Cuba, so its fleshy green look would not attract much attention of petit thefts. Nevertheless, I want to be able to pill the tapes off after the trip without leaving sticking glues/stuff on the frame. Any suggestion? Thanks!

re:Threaded versus threadless headset In category Tech issues Written by Timo What's the advantage of a threadless headset over an oldfashioned threaded one? Is the threaded one stiffer/lighter? Would it improve my riding in any way going from threaded to threadless?
re:protecting saddle + post from theft? In category Tech issues Written by Josephus314 I recently had my saddle and seat post stolen off my bike. I had allen screws securing both, not quick release levers. Is there a way to secure the saddle and seat post better to a bike? Locking the saddle frame to the triangle of the bike frame could atleast help protect the saddle, but a relatively thin cable lock can be cut easily. I am looking for some effective ideas to secure both.
re:Are bike frames soldered or brazed? In category Tech issues Written by DavT As far as I know bike frames are always brazed. As far as I know you only solder plumbing joints with soft, well, solder. I'm wondering if the term 'solder' has a place with any part of bike frame construction.
Adding Frame Braze-ons In category Tech issues Written by tpassus I'm refurbishing an Ishiwata 022 steel frameset, and would like to add down tube shifter bosses and top tube cable guides or stops. None of the local bike shops have the capability to do frame brazing. One shop quoted $30 per joint, plus shipping to California. I can find other non-local places like Cyclart that can do the work, but shipping costs are generally prohibitive. A little bit of web
re:Bike Battery Break In? In category Tech issues Written by Dragoon-Babe I just bought the Night Rider Evolution and Light and Motion bike lamps, both of which are NiMH. I charged the batteries as per instructions before my first ride, which was 40 minutes. Now what? Do I continue to use them until they are discharged, or do I recharge them? In one of the instructions, it says that the battery gets its maximum charge time after about 5 or 6 complete charges and dis
re:Must-have tools for home use? In category Tech issues Written by Woolridge Okay, so I've been given some degree of freedom with respect to my next major bike shopping excursion, and I was thinking of getting a decent set of tools to work on my bike(s). Any suggestions for "must-have" items? I'm already planning to get a work stand. I've got a complete set of box-end wrenches, and the like. I'm just looking for recommendations for those bike tools that I won't reali
re:age of the disposable frame. In category Tech issues Written by bowhack As the last of the LeMond steel is being snapped up by sentimentalists at your LBS, we have entered the age of the disposable frame. Beer can bikes that might last 2 years at most, now are the only choice. The LBS should just sell frames, and provide a service where the components on your old disposable frame, are moved to the new frame. Maybe it won't ever be as easy as chucking an old tire in
re:Question: Cannondale M1000 crank options In category Tech issues Written by brianzen I have acquired a mid-90s M1000 which started life as a mountain bike, but was converted to road use (XT shifters, Ultegra crankset (double), cassette & deraileurs street tires). My object is to convert it to a "cyclo-cross on steroids" setup and I've put GEAX revert185 tires, XT rear deraileur and cassette on. Turns out 39x34 is not low enough for an old (47) man like me. My first thought wa
re:Adjusting older campagnolo brakes In category Tech issues Written by fresh1 I have an older Guerciotti with Campagnolo brakes. I think the brakes are either Chorus, C-Record, or Athena. The front or the mounting bolt is 'pointy'. The front brake tends to rub on the right hand side of the rim after the brakes are applied. i.e. they're not centering. Does anyone know of a procedure for ensuring these old brakes return to center?
re:Advice on best frame size for me In category Tech issues Written by DavT I am in the process of putting together a new bike and I am having trouble making a decision of which of two frame sizes I should choose. I know that the right answer is to ride both sizes and pick the one that fits best, unfortunately I do not have this option. There is no dealer near me that carries the brand I am interested in(Soma) and even if there were it would have to be an exceptional shop
re:getting a frame ball burnished In category Tech issues Written by bourne Does anybody know of a company that would ball burnish a single bike frame or otherwise do small jobs like this? Who does this kind of work in small lots. Everyone I've called in the yellow pages under metal polishing turns down the job, because they are industrial sized businesses that do large volumes. I have an old Jamis Dakar frame with a polished finish. The finish is in rough shape. I s
re:Stubborn BB In category Tech issues Written by allen-sama The dilema of the winter has arisen. I need to replace my BB and am unable to remove the toasted on from my frame. re:Paramount seatpost diameter In category Tech issues Written by Niflheim I have an 1991 Schwinn Paramount series 5 road bike frame (Japan). I wonder if anybody would know what diameter seatpost I would need. I tried my 27.2 mm but it seemed to big.
re:Marketing BS? In category Tech issues Written by InStyle76 Came across the following on a high-end bike maker's Web site. This one addresses "vertical compliance": "A bicycle in motion is subjected to a constant barrage of vertical forces. These affect performance in several ways. A bicycle that is able to absorb some of these forces, or loads, through vertical compliance will be characterized by better power transfer, improved handling, and increased c
re:Another useless gimic? In category Tech issues Written by USEnfield Saw a very expensive frame in my local bicycle shop with large diamond-shaped holes in the chainstays. The carbon fibre tubes split into two, then rejoined, leaving a hole. I think it would require spin of election campaign manager proportions to justify that one.

re:Centerpull brakes In category Tech issues Written by Duke8899 Though I've been critical of Grant Peterson's effort to revive centerpull brakes, I have to admit that the latest Rivendell Reader (#30) gave me reasons to pause. First of all, in the letters section, a reader (Thomas Papetti) points out that dual-pivot sidepulls won't track an out-of-true rim the way all other brake types will. I'm not sure how much that counts in favor of centerpulls (Papetti d
re:Can't Pull Apart Campy Record BB In category Tech issues Written by Miscellaneous_86 I have a late 90s record bottom bracket with carbon fiber weave tube, aluminium cups and hollow spindle. I would like to clean and repack the insides of the cups since I can hear some sand. I easily removed the left cup by simply pulling but the right cup will not budge. I know that it is possible to remove the right cup but is it a pulling or turning motion? I tried pulling as hard as I could, sh
