For years, I've been amazed how riders, fighting for GC with a gap over their rivals, will set up and salute as they approach the line, their bikes slowing substantially before they trigger the clock.

Every second counts!!! Dammit, you have to sprint for that line -- the bike length you lose in that salute may be the bike length which costs you the second which costs you the tour.

It was my assumption that a white line marks the official finish, but it also seemed clear today that Petacchi stopped pedaling and held up his arms (for victory) when he hit the first of three "Fiat" logos, well before the white line. After 200 km, why quit 10 m before the end? -- or is it simply a matter of perspective?

Things are looking good for the flat stages this year. Peta, Boonen (who doesn't think Petacchi poses a problem for him to win 2-3 stages and the green), McEwen, Cooke, and the aging superstars, Zabel and
Cipo. All these teams together provide a lot of horsepower and motivation for bunch finishes.
