Bike Shoes Question

We have been biking for about 4 months now.
This may be an obvious question to many of you so please extend some patience.

My wife bought some bike shoes. They have the Shimano (sp?) logo on them.
The bottom of the shoe had a removable rectangular section of sole where the clip for the pedals is to be installed. We installed the clips and saved the sole sections.

OK, I am going to buy a bike. I need it for transportation mainly and dont know much about bikes. Most days I am going to ride 4 miles (I know that is very short but with an 5-10 lb. backpack and I need to get there preety fast). 2 miles each way from college to my house.
I am also thinking of joining an bike group so I guess it shouldnt just be for short rides. I can only spend around 800 dollars

I currently have SPD pedals and double sided mountain bike pedals, mountain bike shoes (recessed cleat).

I want to upgrade to a real road pedal, probably Look or Time.

My main reason for upgrading is the SPDs are a pain to click into. The cleat & pedal are so small, I have a hard time getting in. I have to hunt around until it finally clicks in. I usually have to pull up to make sure I'm r

After using spd clipless pedals on my MTB for many years now, I'm getting a road bike and was wondering if it's a bad idea to also use spd pedals there as well, since I already own a couple of pairs as well as a couple of pairs of spd shoes.

Is the added stiffness of a true road shoe worth the added expense and inconvenience (I assume walking in road shoes is much more of a hassle.)

My Pinarello Surprise/Centaur (under 2 years old - 60 miles max per week)
has recently developed a very annoying creak - the only way I can compare the noise is that what a big tree makes when its windy.

Anyway I first took it to my very local bike shop - he pressed on the bars got some creaking which was like what I was hearing. He greased the bars. No change once riding.

I then took it to a sh
