re:The real reason behing the UCI's tech decisions In category Racing Written by Digit The UCI just handed down a ruling banning the use of disc brakes on 'cross bikes. Manufacturers are baffled by this decision, as many 'cross racers have been specifically asking for disc brakes for their better performance in adverse conditions. "Stu Thorne, owner of cyclocross.com and sponsor of a handful of UCI-competing ÂŒcrossers, said the decision might just be an over-reaction to an influx

re:Klein vs. Trek In category Racing Written by Scapegoat My wife just joined a racing team and we're considering either the 2004 Trek 5200 or 2004 Klein Q-Pro XV. They are both similarly priced, and both will be available end of October. Both use Shimano Ultegra components, and both use Bontrager Race Lite wheels. Which bike would you choose? Thanks in advance, PS: Some specs below: sizes 49cm, 52cm, 54cm, 56cm, 58cm, 61cm color Silve

re:Say it aint so Shimano ... PART 2 In category Tech issues Written by travelernj Looks to me Japan-style price deflation is taking down prices of engineered bicycle components everywhere. Shimano isn't the only component-maker trying to prop up prices to stay alive. See the recent notice from Chris King, listed below, for another desperate attempt to maintain prices in the market channel. Perhaps new Chinese components will be hitting the USA mainland soon ?? - Don Gillies
re:convert a bicycle In category Tech issues Written by KNTain I have an older Schwinn road bicycle that I would like to convert to a comfort hybrid bicycle. What would it take to accomplish such a conversion? I am not that knowledgable about bicycles, but, I find the ride on the road bike to be uncomfortable. I would rather sit upright than bending over all the time. I do not ride that often.
new cassette or derailer for better shifting? also brake/sh In category Tech issues Written by hendrix1979 i have pretty low end drivetrain components and i can upgrade 1 piece this weekend. for the front i have Acera derailer and chainrings that came on Suntour XCC-300 crankset. for the rears i have Alivio derailer and a Shimano HG30 8-speed cassette. to get overall better shifting performance, should i get: 1. re:Building a touring drivetrain In category Tech issues Written by abbsci420 I have a Gunnar Crosshairs that will be on touring duty this summer, pulling a Burley Nomad trailer thru Spain. Right now, I have a Shimano 600 series gruppo on the bike, with a 48-39 crankset up front and an 8-speed Shimano Hyperglide cassette in the back, all road parts. At first, on the advice of a friend, I was planning on simply swapping the rear cassette for a MTB cassette, perhaps an LX o
Dura Ace STI In category Tech issues Written by Asmodean I have searched the archives and haven't been able to find any information on the problem I am having. My apologies if this has been asked previously. I have the D/A STI shifters double. My issue is that that brake levers occasionally will engage the front brake slightly when I go over a bump on a trail or the road. I can eliminate the noise by opening the calipers wider. I would like to know i
How to disasamble Campy Record levers... In category Tech issues Written by fred1 How do I remowe the brake lever on my Record Ergopower?? In the sparepart catalog it seems like there are 2 small round parts that needs to go off first - will I be able to reuse them when putting things back on?
re:if you wanted maximum braking, where would you sit? In category Tech issues Written by Woolridge if you could position your center of gravity anywhere, to ensure maximum braking power, where would it be? obviously over the front wheel is no good, you would flip. there is a point, leaning either ahead of the front wheel, or behind the back wheel, that the opposite wheel is off the ground. clearly those are 2 limits, the answer must lie between them. if there were very little friction, it w
XTR Shifting help In category Tech issues Written by lawtonlyons I've got an Amp b-4 that I've really never gotten to shift well. Originally I was sporting a sram 8 speed 9.0 rear derailleur and shifters with a Truvativ Stylo Crankset and BB, and XTR cassette. It was shifting OK, but should have been better. When I broke the derailleur, I put on an XTR rear derailleur and a set of M910 XTR shifter/brake levers. I was using a sram PC68 chain with each setup. Th
re:Sigma BC1600 on wireless In category Tech issues Written by KNTain Bought this computer about one month ago and it has worked flawlessly until now. A couple of days ago i realized that the registered distance for my commute to work was getting far to short. Cut the ends off Profile Airwing? In category Tech issues Written by PsychoT I have a 26.0mm Airwing and will be using Dia-Compe reverse pull brake levers. re:Disk road/cross bike for winter training In category Tech issues Written by thersupermikey I'm thinking about a disk brake cross bike for primarily winter road riding. I've read the previous related threads. My reason for wanting disks is that it rains fairly constantly here (Hood River, OR) in the winter, and daily riding involves significant climbing and descending. The roads are covered with cinders or sand in the winter, and rim brakes work poorly, eat through rims and pads, and
Upgrading from DT to STI, 7 to 8 speed In category Tech issues Written by Void* I'm contemplating upgrading my 7-speed DT to 8 speed STI. I believe some RSX shifters were 7-speed, but it seems most were 8. If I go this route, I would need new brakes (I have single-pivot now) at least, but would I need to replace my wheel or hub or freehub? I was under the impression that 7 and 8-speed cog spacing is the same, so they could be interchanged easily, but the hub spacing is 130
re:changing to flat bar,A little long In category Tech issues Written by Phrantic Ok hears my idea .I don't use the drop on my road bike like never ,I was going to put a flat bar and new shifters and V brakes on it,The shifters are Shimano xt with brake levers,Will these work with my 105 derailers.I'm going to keep my arrow bars and use bar ends I fell more comfortable with the Mtn bike set .Not that interested in the arrow effect of the drop bars ,All I ever use are the top of
re:Steel bars In category Tech issues Written by travelernj I ride a relatively budget, rigid mountain bike. It's 7005 T6 aluminium with a cromoly rigid fork. I don't ride serious off-road but I do ride 30-40 mile rides on rough country roads/trails regularly. As my ride times get longer I've noticed my hands getting a tad numb. Recently I was reading a review of a similar rigid mountain bike which talked about its steel bars being bad for the hands, the
re:Handlebar selection In category Tech issues Written by Phrantic I'm building a modern touring bike from an old lugged trek touring frame. I'm trying to decide on a handlebar. I've seen several bars I like, but they seem to be either no groove or single groove. Any input would be appreciated.

Brakes for handicapped kid In category Tech issues Written by marsgirlie I',m trying to think up what the best brake setup would be for a handicapped kid. My son has Downs Syndrome and at the age of 12 learned to ride a threespeed with a footbrake, no handbrakes. Now at seventeen it's time to get him a more or less fullgrown bike. At least a normal MTB frame with 26" wheels. Probably only one gear at least up front. Maybe put hydraulic discs on it. Does anybody know i
Shims for short reach levers In category Tech issues Written by WalrusOnYourFace My wife's having problems reaching the brake levers from the drops. Her bike's got Ultegra levers. I see that Shimano makes special ST-R600 levers which have shims for adjusting the reach. Are there any similar shims for "regular" Ultegra levers? Or are the ST-R600 shims available as parts? If I have to, I could drill & tap the housings.
XTR brake levers with Avid mechanical disk brakes In category Tech issues Written by Dispater Will XTR v-brake levers (BL-M950) work with Avid mechanical disk brakes The levers have Shimano's Servo-Wave feature. With old cantilevers, Servo Wave meant variable mechanical advantage. Not sure what it means wit v-brakes. My concern is Servo-Wave will cause problems when used wit mechanical disk brakes, such as lockup or poor modulation. These lever have 'adjustable' Servo-Wave. Does that mean
re:Dura Ace 10 speed In category Tech issues Written by fC I'm just deciding to buy a Campagnolo Record or a Shimano Dura Ace set. Shimano has 9 speed, Campagnolo 10 speed. re:Buying a road bike - advice? In category Tech issues Written by loanercrow Just completed my first century on an old mountain bike. Considering a Road bike for commuting... good idea? In category Tech issues Written by Woolridge I'm considering purchasing a new bicycle (Maybe $800 CDN total) to replace my nearly 8 year old Mongoose IBOC Pro mountain bike. I used to use it mainy for offroad but a knee injury stopped that, and in the past few years I've used it purely for commuting (10K's to school and back, 30-40K rides on weekends, stuff like that). I'm just wondering if purchasing a road bike would be more appropriate t

Help me decide on a great commuter bike In category Tech issues Written by jellyphisher I'm in the process of trying to put together (or buy if there's one available) a great commuter/bad weather bike. I intend to use it mostly for commuting (12 miles each way in reasonably hilly terrain--takes me about 45-50 minutes), especially in rainy weather. When the weather is nice and the roads are clear, I'll probably ride my road bike instead. My 54cm Trek 5200 fits me like a glove, so I'
re:handlebar width for new road bike In category Tech issues Written by 51875 I currently use an old Brahma bar on an old Giant Iguana mountain bike for road riding (sounds crazy?). If you don't know what a braham bar is, here's a pic: http://www.bikepro.com/products/handlebars/hndlbars_jpg/c1c_brahma.jpg Some manufacturers also call this a trial bar since it's really good for sprinting and up hills (which is what I really use it for). I think triatheletes use them as wel
re:Cut cable housing with cable inside In category Tech issues Written by MartinSt Anybody know of a way to cut brake cable housing while the cable is in the middle and not damaging it. I am almost done with transferring all my components from the old cracked road frame to the new road frame, except for the single cable housing piece that was used for the rear brake has to be cut into 2 peices with the new frame layout. It would save me undoing the handle bar tape and some other
re:Non-anatomic handlebars In category Tech issues Written by TurboChick I find that my fingers cannot reach the brake levers from the drops. I have ITM anatomic bars and Campy brifters. This is my first road bike. Would I have an easier reach with the non-anatomic bars? It seems that nearly all the drop bars made today are the anatomic shape. Why have manufacturers stopped making the non-anatomic kind?
Limitations on triple chainring combinations with STI? In category Tech issues Written by ccrider I'm planning to redo (new paint job + components) an older touring bike that is currently setup with Suntour 7spd (28-38-48 front 13-30 rear). Sometimes a BOB trailer with ~40 lbs of gear are pulled as well. The bike isn't
Campy drivetrain setup for touring In category Tech issues Written by ccrider I'm getting closer to figuring out what to do with my touring bike (13 year old Bruce Gordon Rock 'n Road currently w/ Suntour XC Comp; 130mm rear spacing; 68mm bottom bracket). re:Drop bar brake levers In category Tech issues Written by Bluecynic I'm building a single-speed cyclocross/road bike, so I need to get brake levers for a traditional drop bar. Because I have Campagnolo Ergopower levers on my primary bike, I obviously have preference to the same hood shape. However, the only brake-only levers made by Campagnolo are the $120+ Record levers, which don't really fit into this concept of a modest low-budget winter bike. Would it make a

re:long lever return spring on Dura Ace STI levers In category Tech issues Written by taospowder Listed among my many faults is the desire to take things apart that I shouldn't, like the above shift/brake levers. I got it back together but now the long lever doesn't spring back into position after shifting up into larger rear cogs. re:Handlebar choice ? In category Tech issues Written by ccrider I'm looking for some new bars to replace my Cinelli Giro d'Italia 64 bars. I find that the slope on the top part of the Cinelli's makes it difficult for me to maintain a comfy hand position when riding "on the hoods". re:How do I buy a decent kid's bike? In category Tech issues Written by hrd2hndle Both my kids (9 and 6) have become fairly proficient riders over the past year. Adjusting cantilever brakes and brake quick release In category Tech issues Written by jellyphisher I have a set of Avid Shorty 6 cantilever brakes on my Redline Conquest Pro frame with a set of STI 8-speed shifters (probably 105, but there are no labels left). It seems that when I adjust the brakes to be close enough to the rim so that I don't have to move the lever very much before braking actually starts, then the cable is too tight to be even possi
re:Exage brake levers In category Tech issues Written by kkaye My LBS is one of those places where they don't sell new bikes, but have piles and piles of NOS from the last 20 years. I just picked up a pair of Exage/Shimano SLR "æro"(?) brake levers. Ummm... The QR's are semi-recessed and if the lever is snapped back, it goes back into the handle. I know I just need an exploded diagram or something to get this fixed, they can't be broken--they can't! Als
re:brake levers, road bike, flat bar In category Tech issues Written by Pink I have put together a flat bar road bike with grip shifters and mountain type brake levers. this setup is for my wife and she really likes the design mainly because she has mastered the grip shift on the mountain bike and doesn't have to go through a new learning process which can be tough on both of us. One problem is that I don't feel the rear brake has enough power for a safe emergency stop. I
