re:Building a touring drivetrain

I have a Gunnar Crosshairs that will be on touring duty this summer, pulling a Burley Nomad trailer thru Spain. Right now, I have a Shimano
600 series gruppo on the bike, with a 48-39 crankset up front and an
8-speed Shimano Hyperglide cassette in the back, all road parts. At first, on the advice of a friend, I was planning on simply swapping the rear cassette for a MTB cassette, perhaps an LX o

I just set up a bike with Ultegra triple. All new Shimano drivetrain parts and shifters and a Specialties Alize crank with 50-40-30 rings.
Rear shifting is perfect, but front shifting is very touchy. It feels very "notchy", grinds a bit on upshifts, and downshifts go "clunk" and

I'm planning to redo (new paint job + components) an older touring bike that is currently setup with Suntour 7spd (28-38-48 front 13-30 rear). The bike is used for a variety of things, including having a Burley Picollo trailer cycle + a 40 lb human ballast attached (they only seem to help pedal when going downhill). Sometimes a BOB trailer with ~40 lbs of gear are pulled as well. The bike isn't

I'm getting closer to figuring out what to do with my touring bike (13 year old Bruce Gordon Rock 'n Road currently w/ Suntour XC Comp; 130mm rear spacing; 68mm bottom bracket). My plan is to strip it down this winter, and send it out to be repainted and then rebuild it with a new drivetrain. So now some questions...

For a number of reasons, I want to go with Campagnolo Ergo brifters on drop ba

Yesterday I was having a problem with my right STI shifter (Ultegra). When I went to downshift, the lever moved freely with no resistance, literally flopping around. But when I moved it a second time, it shifted normally. Any offhand notions of what's going on? I haven't even investigated it myself yet. I've been busy, and today the garage is too cold!
