I'm thinking of building a road bike from the ground up, and I want to do it on a budget. If you were to splurge on one or two components what would they be? Dereailur? Wheelset? Fork? Brakes?
Also what components can I get away with going cheap on?

I got hit by a car last week and the bike is wrecked and I was very lucky with minor injuries so not complaining too much!!

My Campy Record 8 speed levers (1996 vintage) have been smashed as well as a
CAAD4 frame.

Insurance forces me to go through the LBS and he is sourcing 9 speed levers.
I can either let him downgrade them to 8 speed to work with my current drivetrain which is intact or upgrad

Considering an modification from 8 to 9 speed (want to use 13-28 cassettes). Will my existing 95 Athena and 96 Racing T cranksets work with the narrower 9 speed chains??

My wife's Ultegra STI 8 speed levers are trashed. I want to replace them with a Campy Ergo. Is there any Campy Erro set that will work without replacing the calipers and the rear hub?

Does anyone have any suggestions for some higher quality replacement shifter cable barrel adjusters? The bike currently has down tube mounted adjusters and they have tended to corrode and look bad.

They also have the tendency to twist with every turn of the headset.
Unfortunately, they rarely twist and untwist in exactly the same amount which causes the shifter to constantly go out of adjustment

9 speed Campy on 8 speed hubs- possible??

I have a Campy 8 speed Vento rear wheel and wonder if there is anyway to use a 9 speed cassette without have to buy a new cassette body- does any company make a conversion spacer or cog kit?? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks
