Team Telelkom switching over to Giant & Shimano this season

Cycle sport magazine reported that T-Mobile (AKA Team Telekom) is switching over to Giant bikes and Shimano parts. I was a little disturbed to hear this given my dislike for Shimano.

Small cyclocross frames and toe overlap?

I've never been one to get too deeply into the details of frame design since I have a fairly average body and seem to adapt well to any reasonably designed bike. My wife is a different story though and I'm trying to understand the tradeoffs necessary to get a good fit for her with a small cyclocross bike. Her current frame is a 48 cm Redline

after reading Sheldon's website I'm curious...can I do this:

thread a track cog onto my road wheelset and go with that? Am I missing something?

I want to turn an old bike into a fixed gear as cheaply as possible...it's got dura ace 9 speed hubs.

Saw a very expensive frame in my local bicycle shop with large diamond-shaped holes in the chainstays. The carbon fibre tubes split into two, then rejoined, leaving a hole.

I think it would require spin of election campaign manager proportions to justify that one.

I am building a fixed gear bike and I am wondering a little bit about the
"perfect chainline" that I have been reading about on several web pages.
Why is it so necessary to have it perfect (non of the web pages a visited really explains "why")? Does a millimeter or two of makes any different?
