re:Hub recommendations In category Tech issues Written by Ryoma Instead of getting a new road bike this fall I am getting myself a kick bum pair of wheels built up for my current road bike. I am looking for recommendations on hubs and I consider the desired traits I value the same as I do for mountain wheels. In my view here are my qualifications in order: 1. smoothness of the bearings 2. durability of the hub overall 3. strength of the axel 4. light weight 5
good small horn In category Tech issues Written by tiger I'm thinking of adding a loud horn to my commuting bike, but I don't want a large gizmo like the Air Zounds (3"x4" IIRC), nor an additional water-bottle-cage battery (already have a Sigma Sport battery for the lights and the cage for the actual water bottle). What's a good loud horn that's tiny and doesn't require a huge battery? Commercial or DIY, I don't care.
Considering a Road bike for commuting... good idea? In category Tech issues Written by Woolridge I'm considering purchasing a new bicycle (Maybe $800 CDN total) to replace my nearly 8 year old Mongoose IBOC Pro mountain bike. I used to use it mainy for offroad but a knee injury stopped that, and in the past few years I've used it purely for commuting (10K's to school and back, 30-40K rides on weekends, stuff like that). I'm just wondering if purchasing a road bike would be more appropriate t
re:Disc brakes with Ultegra? In category Tech issues Written by ccrider I am currently putting together the pats list for a new bicycle. While I was planning around the Ultegra group, I was pointed to Avid's road type mechanical disc brakes, for which I found some rather positive reviews. As I would want to use this bike also for traveling, this is an interesting option. From what I gathered, these brakes are compatible with the Ultegra brake/shift levers. For the h
re:Sidelights In category Tech issues Written by jojo Many, many moons ago I bought these stick-on, etched metal reflectors to replace the bulky, irritating bolt on wheel reflectors for my commuting bike. They were much brighter, formed a distinctive two-circle shine that literally screamed "Bicycle!" to any one who saw them. At slower speeds they even had an attention getting strobe like effect. The fact that they weighed nothing, didn't throw my w
re:expensive road bikes fussy and unreliable? In category Tech issues Written by jkrukoff i;ve seen it in here, "commuting on a racing bike is hard duty". but, if you are not really pounding the pedals, it seems to me that the only hard thing is mileage. my one way trip is 13 miles. i have a couple of mid price road/race bikes. a. 2002 fuji finest with sora group b. 1996 or so gt edge with 600 group what is about commuting that is supposed to be so hard? it;s just miles. i don;t
re:Go Triple or Just Change Rear Cassette? In category Tech issues Written by MeteoraSession The easiest combination on my road bike is a 39 teeth on front and 23 teeth on rear. How different woud a change to a triple on front be to a change to a 27 tooth cassette on the rear be?
re:Suggestions fro a 'bulletproof' semi-slick touring tire. In category Tech issues Written by travelernj Recently I had a puncture on my commuting bike, now I'm considering 'upgrading' this bike to be my winter trainer and have come round to thinking that the spezialised fat boys it currently 'wears' are not up to the occasional semi off-road usage I'll be doing. I'm also keen on having VERY puncture resistant tyres as I want to minimise any non cycling outdoor winter activity. So to summarise: Doe
re:MTB Hybrid conversion In category Tech issues Written by Kao B_alpha I'd like to take the End-to-end tour in Britain but I don't have a suitable touring bike. Instead, I have a TREK aluminum MTB and a single-speed road bike (I guess you'd have to call it a commuting bike now). Neither by themselves are sufficient for touring, but I'm thinking the MTB could convert well to a touring bike with the addition of road-style handlebars, shifters and slicks. Is there an
re:Weight and the drive-train (was expensive road bikes fussy In category Tech issues Written by puddleglum Is it really, when you consider all the parts of a deraileur drive train (hub, freehub, cassette, rear mech, front mech, extra rings, extra chain, extra changer)? If so, by how much?
re:Time trail v Traditional Road Bike In category Tech issues Written by cphillips I'm currently in the market for a bike to use for triathlons, training & the occasional commute. Can somebody summarise what are the pro's & con's of buying a time-trail bike rather then a traditional road bike.
Question on Shimano Bar End Shifters In category Tech issues Written by ccrider Just got a set of these. The box says they are 9 speed, but I can only hear/feel 8 distinct positions (excluding pushing the lever to it's extremes where it bumps into the housing). What am I missing? The enclosed manual also say it should only be used with a Dura Ace rear deraileur. I assume this is marketing to sell more Dura Ace, and not a hard requirement. My plan is to use it with a Deor
re:Do I want a cross bike for commuting? Help me decide? In category Tech issues Written by ccrider Maybe you guys can help me make a decision on what kind of bike I want? I already have a Habanero mt bike. Love it But Im yearning for something a bit "faster". Most al of my riding is back/forth to work. With an occasional weekend tour or ride However.... Ive been secretly thinking abt a week long tour someday. Don't know where... Having said all that.... what's everyone opinions on a cro
re:road tires for snow and ice In category Tech issues Written by ccrider Crashed today after hitting a patch of ice on my commute. Fortunately I was going uphill, so going slow... No damage other than skinned knee. I wonder if winter-capable tires would have helped. I'm currently using 700x23 Conti GP 3000's (obviously not winter tires). I'm looking for suggestions for winter road tires that can handle slush or snow and perhaps perform a bit better on the occasion 0 Products tagged with "commuting bike" |
