re:The real reason behing the UCI's tech decisions In category Racing Written by Digit The UCI just handed down a ruling banning the use of disc brakes on 'cross bikes. Manufacturers are baffled by this decision, as many 'cross racers have been specifically asking for disc brakes for their better performance in adverse conditions. "Stu Thorne, owner of cyclocross.com and sponsor of a handful of UCI-competing ÂŒcrossers, said the decision might just be an over-reaction to an influx
re:Backward-ass UCI does it again! In category Racing Written by jamband UCI bans disc brakes from 'cross events By Andrew Juskaitis This report filed October 20, 2003 A new technical edict from cycling's international governing body has sent professional cyclo-cross racers scrambling for new equipment... and maybe grasping for an explanation. According to a technical updated posted to USA Cycling's website, professional cyclo-cross racers will no longer be able to r
Cyclocross training questions In category Racing Written by Sushi Sure I could search the archives for some answers, but then I'd deprive those of who obviously embrace newcomers to the sport an opportunity to provide valuable insight. I've done a dozen or so of road and mountain bike races over the years but am training for my first cyclocross race (http://www.teammackracing.com/pdf/CrossFlyer.pdf) and have a handful of questions. 1. What's the most effective

Cyclo-cross In category Racing Written by eprensky75 As fall bears down on us like a jackknifed 18-wheeler with no brakes and a full load of live pigs, the Mad Dog Media 'CrossNet has begun posting links to 2003 cyclo-cross websites at http://www.maddogmedia.com/crossnet
re:mounting fenders on bike with cantilever brakes In category Tech issues Written by abbsci420 I'm getting a new cyclocross bike that I will also use occasionally as a winter trainer. I'm going to want to mount SKS fenders on this bike, and it just occurred to me that I won't have a rear brake bridge (or drilled front fork crown). I can have eyelets put on the dropouts...what else do I need to do to mount the fenders? I'd prefer not to create a ziptie monster!
Small cyclocross frames and toe overlap? In category Tech issues Written by eclipse I've never been one to get too deeply into the details of frame design since I have a fairly average body and seem to adapt well to any reasonably designed bike. My wife is a different story though and I'm trying to understand the tradeoffs necessary to get a good fit for her with a small cyclocross bike. Her current frame is a 48 cm Redline Conquest that has been declared insufficient due to toe-
re:Trek 4900 vs. Cannondale F300 vs. Spez Hardrock Pro Disk In category Tech issues Written by cjb10350 I'm a roadie looking to to ride at night without trashing my expensive skinny tires in the dark; a little off road riding as well (can't say mountain biking honestly--I'm down in Houston). I'm 6'4" and ride a 63 cm. road bike, so I'm figuring a 21 in mountain bike--that cuts down the field a little. I've looked at the 3 bikes above -- anybody got any opinions about them? I'm about 230 (on a go
re:Diatech mini V problem In category Tech issues Written by luxcars I've got a Redline cross bike that came with Diacompe 287 levers and Diatech mini V brakes. The front brake works fine, but I can not get the rear brake to work well at all. I've tried replacing the cables and housing (with lots of grease). I've tried replacing the pads, and using different wheels. Nothing seems to work - no matter how hard I squeeze, I won't slow down. The levers don't bott
re:ISIS vs Octalink vs square In category Tech issues Written by Kao B_alpha So I'm starting to think about a new set of cranks & bottom bracket for my cyclocross bike. I have always had square BB spindles on my bikes, but since I now have so many options I'd like some opinion from anyone who has used or regularly worked on the spline drive stuff. They definitely look like an improvement, but does the average mountain or road cyclist see an advantage? Is the square stu
re:Disk road/cross bike for winter training In category Tech issues Written by thersupermikey I'm thinking about a disk brake cross bike for primarily winter road riding. I've read the previous related threads. My reason for wanting disks is that it rains fairly constantly here (Hood River, OR) in the winter, and daily riding involves significant climbing and descending. The roads are covered with cinders or sand in the winter, and rim brakes work poorly, eat through rims and pads, and
re:Good wheels for a Lemond Poprad In category Tech issues Written by TransMan I have a Lemoond Poprad (2003) and it is my first cycle cross bike. I also have recently bent my back wheel a bit. You know, those dang curbs always in the way. But, I took it in to get it fixed and they did the best they could do, but, it isn't perfect. So, it isn't going to last for the long run. To my question: I am now looking for a replacement. Yeah, it kinda sucks to have to look for new wh
re:Best tire for winter (snow) commuting? In category Tech issues Written by Phrantic I'm planning to commute through the winter and this will include riding in the snow. What's the largest tire that will fit under my Chorus brakes? Have any suggestions for a 'best' tire combining min rolling resistance and max traction? Also, have any feedback on Tufo's clincher tubulars? And yes, I'd love to get a cross bike but that'll have to wait until next year.
re:Cyclocross: XT hubs in stead of Ultegra? In category Tech issues Written by SlinkyAvenger My bikeshop recommended making a wheelset with XT hubs in stead of nomral Ultegra hubs, because the XT's would be less damaged my mud and water. What do you, the experts, think of this advice?
mini-v and top mount cross levers In category Tech issues Written by War Bearer I've got a pair of mini-V brakes on my cross bike (it came with them). I'm using barcons and DiaCompe 287 levers. I was wondering if anyone has had any success with any top-mount cross levers out there with a similar setup. The only ones I see that claim to be v-brake compatable are Pauls, but I don't think my mini-vs pull nearly the same amount of cable. So it seems to me they'd work okay.
STI Ultegra shifters & XT front derailleur? In category Tech issues Written by hilltop Hi there, I'm switching from a road double to an XT triple crankset (44-32-22) on my cyclocross bike. I know my Ultegra STI shifters don't need to be changed, but I've heard they don't work well with mtb front derailleurs. Is that right? Should I use a road triple front derailleur instead?
re:Radius Cantilever Adjustment Problems In category Tech issues Written by bodhidharma I recently bought a pair of radius cantis for my cross bike. I'm having trouble finding the "sweet spot" for the staddle wire carrier position. I've looked at Sheldon Brown's canti geometry page which was helpful, but the angles are way different on these brakes and are more like the "wide profile" design that he dismisses as obsolete and inferior to low/medium profile cantis. I've seen this typ
MTB rigid fork In category Tech issues Written by Jyro My wife will be taking a Jamis Exile (2003 all stock) eqipped with an Xtracycle on our touring vacation this summer. The Exile is a Reynolds 520 chromoly frame with a Manitou Axel suspension fork on it, and I was thinking she might like a rigid steel MTB fork for the trip. Any suggestions? I'd like to buy something that can do some offroad duty, and be comfortable.
"8" spd derailleur with 9 spd cassette and chain In category Tech issues Written by Ryver My wife just bought a 'cross bike with a relatively tall lowest gear of 38x25 and 9spd Shimano 105 STI shifters and derailleurs. I'm thinking of swapping out the rear derailer for a mtb variety to accomodate a 32 or 34 tooth cog. I have a neglected old mtb with a STX derailleur from about 5 years ago that was probably designed at the time for 8 spd use. My wife also has a mtb bike purchased in
stuck cassette lockring In category Tech issues Written by velveta Hi - I need tips to remove a stuck cassette lockring. It's an 8 speed Shimano HG-50 cassette on my cross bike. I am the guilty gorilla who overtightened it without a torque wrench this summer. I actiually pulled the chain of the handle of a perfectly good chainwhip trying to undo this SOB. I've tried both a crescent wrench and then a long-armed socket on the lockring tool without much luck. Any ti
Avocet FasGrip Duro Plus 700x32C In category Tech issues Written by mr_minor My preferred ride is a cyclocross bike ridden almost exclusively on well-paved roads, and this tire sounds from its advertising like a good candidate for replacing worn Continental Top Touring 2000s. Is the Duro Plus a true 32mm (which would be fine), or does it run large? How does its longevity in the environment described compare to the Conti's, please?
re:Campy-compatible hubs for disc brakes In category Tech issues Written by ccrider I'm running Campy-10 drivetrain on a cyclocross (130 mm rear) bike, does anyone, other than DT Hugi or maybe Chris King, make such a hub that will run with a Campy cassette? Trying to identify less expensive options. Any other options in 700c wheels, other than to buy the Velomax Sagitta (Campy version) pre-built wheels? These should be available this fall, according to Velomax.
re:Spoke tension: Did I do a dumb thing? In category Tech issues Written by Sak I was wondering if I did something stupid to a wheel today... I was riding my cyclocross bike to the local state park today, but had that loose-spoke pop/tick noise coming from the back wheel. A quick inspection revealed that all of the spokes had more play than normal, but the wheel was perfectly in true. I used my spoke wrench to tighten each nipple a quarter turn, except for a couple that had
re:Cyclocross parts/frame question In category Tech issues Written by hrd2hndle As some of you may know I'm an active cyclist. I do about 10.000 miles/year on my racing bikes. I have some spareparts here(wheelset, chain, cassette, bracket, saddle) and I'm tempted to build a cyclocross bike. Since I have no or little experience with these bikes, I would like to hear from you. I'll ride it during cold days in the winter, when a hard wind is blowing, on flat unpaved roads in
Changed Gearing, Easier Climbing In category Tech issues Written by songswt A recreational club rider, I climb the hilly, rolling terrain around here (SE Pennsylvania) not too badly, but sometimes wish I had one more gear to shift into when the hills get too long and I slow down to the mid-single digits. More of a masher than a spinner, I ride a Lemond Buenos Aires with 105 triple components; the front chainrings are, I think, 30-42-52 (but I rarely use the 52), and on th
re:Four cross spokes for cross wheels? In category Tech issues Written by hypermush I've just completed the build on my first cross bike and have put cross tires on my 32 hole training wheels. These wheels are holding up fine although the fire roads in this area are a little rough on 'em. I am going to build a new set of wheels so that I don't have to switch the tires on these wheels from road to cross. And this leads to my questions. Since I'll be buying new hubs, should I g
re:Advice on best frame size for me In category Tech issues Written by DavT I am in the process of putting together a new bike and I am having trouble making a decision of which of two frame sizes I should choose. I know that the right answer is to ride both sizes and pick the one that fits best, unfortunately I do not have this option. There is no dealer near me that carries the brand I am interested in(Soma) and even if there were it would have to be an exceptional shop
re:bicycle in elevator etiquette? In category Tech issues Written by bwalker perhaps this is off topic: i had a bit of a runin this morning when taking my bicycle up to my office in the elevator. i always walk the bike in on the rear wheel, with the front wheel up. my feeling has been that this is the right way to go, since it takes up far less floor space in the (sometimes a little crowded) elevator. a man who may or may not be an upper-up in my department (gulp) star
re:Drop bars & cantilever brakes - no cable adjustment In category Tech issues Written by KReeP Hi everyone - hope you can help a semi-newbie! Please excuse some wrong terminology... I bought a commuter bike about a month ago (Mongoose Randonneur 2003 model): http://www.christiecycles.com.au/Randonneur%20press.pdf After I upgraded the brakes to Shorty 4's, I've been happy with it, except for a nagging complaint - it's got no cable adjustment for the brakes (except by releasing the cable wi
re:Avid mechanical road disc brakes In category Tech issues Written by ChadRay I just got the Cannondale cross bike with these brakes. A couple of questions. Are the stock pads good enough to keep until they wear out? I only have an hour on the bike and am wondering what the average range of break in time is needed for the brakes to work their best. Can anyone coomment on their performance when broken in?
CX/Commuter questions In category Tech issues Written by akhkharu99 I've been thinking about building a CX bike that'd mostly see commuting duty (5 days a week, less than 10 miles, to and on campus). I am planning on a Surly CrossCheck frame, but since I'm a MTB guy, I have a few roadie-related questions: 1 - Shifters...I know not all Campy stuff works with Shimano, and vice versa. I prefer Campy levers (feel and name) but can get Shimano a bit cheaper, and am

re:Marketing BS? In category Tech issues Written by InStyle76 Came across the following on a high-end bike maker's Web site. This one addresses "vertical compliance": "A bicycle in motion is subjected to a constant barrage of vertical forces. These affect performance in several ways. A bicycle that is able to absorb some of these forces, or loads, through vertical compliance will be characterized by better power transfer, improved handling, and increased c
re:Sora crankset - 9sp? In category Tech issues Written by travelernj I noticed on a sale site that the Sora triple cranks were sold as 8-speed. Is there a problem running a 9speed setup with this? I currently have an 8speed system with a mountain crankset and flat bars and am working on converting to a 9speed with drops. I plan on using: Existing chain (8sp new) Existing RDer (105 triple - new) Sora crankset (triple) Ultegra integrated shifters (new) Shimano 105 t
re:"Sluggish" 29" Mountain Bike Wheels In category Tech issues Written by bwalker A full service bike shop had a some mountain bikes on sale with 29" wheels for rolling over rocks. I'm not a mountain bike rider but I thought 29" wheels were pretty dumb for a couple of reasons. 1. the higher rotational inertia. The salesman admitted some riders complained about the bikes being "sluggish." 2. the limited availability of nonstandard 29" rims, spokes, tubes and tires. Yester
In-Line Barrel Adjusters/was Right Angle Barrel Adjusters In category Tech issues Written by spacedave I also didn't know "in-line cable adjusters" exist. These may work better than the right angle barrel adjusters. I'll have to cut the housing and cable to place them inline. Has anyone tried these?
Cyclocross canti brakes In category Tech issues Written by JPz I'm looking for a good set of canti brakes for a cyclocross bike on a lemond poprad frame. The levers will be campy veloce, any suggestions? I'm looking at avid shorty 6 and empella frogglegs, but I'm open to other options.
re:Roadside Repair - Tufo sealant in a Conti Tubular? In category Tech issues Written by yoda Would it be practical to carry a small tube of TUFO sealant instead of a spare tubular? If (er, when) I get a flat I could put in some tire sealant, add some air (CO2 cartridge), and keep riding. The advatages of this would be not having to carry a tub spare, AND never having to remove the tire to fix the flat when I arrive at home. My biggest concern is: how difficult is it to remove the prest
