hands up all those that feel free to criticize a piece of equipment they've never tried. anyone?

further example: criticism of new materials outside the experience of the author and/or based on erroneous "facts" is a particularly interesting phenomenon.

why do people do it? seriously, i'm genuinely interested by this. any thoughts?

The WheelSmith tensiometer I got last week seems to work OK, but the instructions say it has to be applied away from the butted area.

Only problem is that on my rear wheels the hub is so big that there's not enough space between the non-butted area and where the spokes cross to fit the instrument.

I recently bought a front wheel with a radially-laced, straight-pull 24h
Aerohead rim on ebay, and when it arrived, to my dismay, there were hairline cracks in the anodized layer - perhaps the rim itself? - on at least one side of every spoke hole on the rim.

The seller has kindly offered compensation, but in order to reach agreement we agree on how extensive it should be, he asked me to get a se

I am considering replacing the rear hub on a built wheel. I have seen discussions of replacing the rim, but I wonder if-

- Is there a smooth method for transferring spokes without having to do a total strip and rebuild?

- Any problems using the same spokes? Do inside spokes need to stay on the inside, etc.?

Spoke lengths are the exact same for the two hubs.

I've just completed the build on my first cross bike and have put cross tires on my 32 hole training wheels. These wheels are holding up fine although the fire roads in this area are a little rough on 'em.

I am going to build a new set of wheels so that I don't have to switch the tires on these wheels from road to cross. And this leads to my questions.

I'm building up some 32 hole King ISO hubs with Mavic 3.1 rims.

They are going to replace some standard King hubs w/ 517s as I change a couple of bikes out to Avid discs.

Previously, the woman rider (120lbs loaded with camelback) had 28 hole f/r with revolutions, straightlaced on the front, 3x rear. alloy nipples. very light wheels.

The other rider (185lb) had 32 hole 3x f/r, both revolutions

Any comments. The Topolinos seem to make sense and they are a lot lighter with a carbon hub.
