re:New Shifters that Shift When You're Still In category General Written by HookahMan I'm looking around now at some upmarket bikes for when I grow up. I will be needing a comfort or utility style bike that can be ridden in a skirt, carry lots of shopping, and tackle very steep hills (i.e. it should have a fairy gear and rock-hard brakes). Looking on the Web site of the firm Giant, I see that the new comfort bikes for 2003-4 have a 7 speed Nexus gear shifter that advertizes that i

dura-ace compatibility In category Racing Written by GannasGerl Does anyone know if you can use the new dura ace 10spd shifters with the dura ace 9spd derailuer? I know for a fact you can use 9spd shifters with 8spd derailuer, so I was hoping that you could as to save some money and purchase just the shifters and cassette. I would have posted to the tech web site but my isp doesn't carry it and I can't locate it on the google groups.

re:TDF history & old bicycles In category Racing Written by knese With the publicity about the 100th anniversery of the TDF, I started wondering what the bicycles were like in 1903. I found a good web site, though I wish it had more pictures: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/veloarchive/races/tour/index.htm This page http://homepage.ntlworld.com/veloarchive/races/tour/1908.htm has a pretty good picture of the bike, which has only one sprocket on the back, and no
re:Millar????? In category Racing Written by scottypu What do you think David Millar will do after the season. I figure he will leave Confidis. He is an intresting case as he is not an overall contender but he can win stages. I think he might be most attractive to teams looking for a boost in TTT? Maybe this is too early to be talking about, but people ask me if Lance will win six and then the TTT comes up and you have to wonder if David Millar could

re:What component should I splurge on? In category Racing Written by chucklynel I'm thinking of building a road bike from the ground up, and I want to do it on a budget. re:Ergomo and Power Tap comparison In category Racing Written by eggphish1 Some of you may know that the Ergomo bottom bracket-based power meter has recently entered the market. Although some Ergomo dealers have done private testing and comparisons of their systems, until now there has not been any publicly-available data set that could be used for independent evaluation. Last week, Ergomo-USA put some data files on their website that were collected during a two-hour rid

re:Shimano 10-Speed In category Racing Written by Kensou I've talked to several shop owners lately about the Shimano 10-speed stuff and was sort of surprised at what they had to say. Apparently it is very time consuming (civilians would probably say "difficult") to get the thing set up and shifting reliably. That surprised me because if there's one thing I've never had any problems with Shimano, it's getting their STI stuff to come in bang on with no w

re:The Bikesmith, Seattle, shutting down In category Racing Written by mrswigon I was talking to Val Kleitz at the Bikesmith in Seattle today and he told me that he will have to go out of business in a couple of weeks. changing bands on my derailleur In category Tech issues Written by EtherMage Just bought a used triple front derailleur and it has the wrong size band on it (think the guy pulled a fast one on me..oh well). I was wondering if a person could buy a replacement band for the same derailleur. It is a Shimano 105 FD-5504 and has a 28.6 band on it now (silver and should have been black) bit I need one for 31.8 (hopefully black). Does anyone know if you can buy the band separately
re:Say it aint so Shimano ... PART 2 In category Tech issues Written by travelernj Looks to me Japan-style price deflation is taking down prices of engineered bicycle components everywhere. Shimano isn't the only component-maker trying to prop up prices to stay alive. See the recent notice from Chris King, listed below, for another desperate attempt to maintain prices in the market channel. Perhaps new Chinese components will be hitting the USA mainland soon ?? - Don Gillies

Shimano RSX Shifter Sometimes Doesn't In category Tech issues Written by jcharum I have RSX shifters on my el cheapo Giant Peloton 7000 road bike, and they've worked fine since purchase (about 3 years now, in which the bike's done anything from 0 to 180km per week). Adjusting Campy Centaur rear der In category Tech issues Written by Capheine I just assembled a campy centaur group onto my frameset. Im having some problem with the indexing system in the rear. re:derailleur hangers - bends on its own??? In category Tech issues Written by bodhidharma so what makes rear derailleur hangers bend? yesterday i noticed my indexed gears were no longer indexed. the chain was jumping between gears. tried to shift to lowest gear, didn;t get all the way before the idler wheel started hitting spokes, backed out of that before too late. got home, the derailleur hanger was bent. but - no crash, nothing happened. i do remember a mis-shifting incident,
re:halfstep impossible? In category Tech issues Written by DavT My current gearing for my tourbike is a 44-36-22 crank with a standard 12-14-16-18-20-23-26-30-34 cassette. Since my 44 alu needs replacement and I almost never use the high gears I thought about replacing it with a 42 steel one. Also replacing the cassette with an (expensive) custom 13-15-17-18-19-21-24-28-34. This would give me tight spacing between 50 and 70 inch. But looking at the gearchart
re:Derailleur Pulleys In category Tech issues Written by blr I replaced the pulleys on my RSX 8 speed rear derailleur to troubleshoot a drivetrain noise problem. It seems to have fixed the problem and the old pulleys were pretty worn. The replacements are Rockwerks alloy with sealed ABEC 3 bearings. I just noticed that the old pulleys are 10 tooth and the new ones are 11 tooth. They fit okay and seemed to work okay on a quick trip around the neighborhoo
Eric Claptons gears. In category Tech issues Written by dak Something I stumbled on today. The title of the album, Disraeli Gears, was actually a bit of an inside joke. Eric had been thinking of getting a racing bike, and was discussing it with Ginger, when Mick Turner, one of the roadies, commented on the performance of "those Disraeli Gears" meaning to say "derailleur gears". The lads thought this was hilarious and decided that it should be the title of
New FAQ topic - bike noise checklist/brake squeal In category Tech issues Written by jbass66 Howdy. It seems like everyday there is a new post about a frustrating bike creak/tick/knock, and every other day a frustrating squealing brake. The FAQ doesnt have much in teh way of practical advice here. re:Building a touring drivetrain In category Tech issues Written by abbsci420 I have a Gunnar Crosshairs that will be on touring duty this summer, pulling a Burley Nomad trailer thru Spain. Centering XTR Disc Brakes In category Tech issues Written by DuDe I am having trouble getting my rear disc brake caliper (2003 XTR) to center on the rotor on my 2003 Jamis Dakar Pro. When the wheel is seated correctly the rotor is pressing firmly against the outside pad and I can see no way of moving the caliper "outboard" to account for this. Noise problem after upping 9 speed cassette from 25 to 27 te In category Tech issues Written by dooger My current chain derailleur setup is for a 25 tooth Shimano cassette. XTR Shifting help In category Tech issues Written by lawtonlyons I've got an Amp b-4 that I've really never gotten to shift well.
