I have a rear wheel that has a Campag screw on hub. The BB on the frame is
Shimano.

I would like to utilise it as a commute/trainer bike and so would like to just have a single 42T chainring and use a wide range of sprockets at the back.

Could I use a downtube friction shifter so that there would be no indexing problems with the Campag/Shimano setup?

Given this, what rear mech would you recomme

So I 've gotten the bright idea into my head to try and do the Mt.
Washington hillclimb this summer. my current setup is a double chainring and I'd like to convert to a tripple. what is the bare minimun I need to change out? my assumption is:
-Left Ultegra STI lever -> STI tripple (or add a downtube friction shifter cause I've got one on hand, whoo hoo)

Okay, here I go again with my vague understanding or Shimano triple setups.
I read at the Shimano site (details on Dura Ace triple front derailleur) that the MINIMUM drop from the large ring to the middle is 14 teeth.
MINIMUM it said. That would seem to indicate I can't use the Ultegra crankset I have with it. My question now is can I simply put a 39 ring in the middle of my ultegra triple crank

MTB rapidfire shifter on Shimano 600

I'm considering buying an old road bike with a complete Shimano 600 series drivetrain and would like to make it into a city cruiser with a MTB style handlebar. I would therefore like to put a MTB rapidfire shifter on the bike instead of the old non-indexed frame located shifter. I don't plan on using the front derailleur at all.

I have a Torpado Road bike that I'm replacing the drive train with using spare parts.

The front dual chain ring is a 53/42 teeth (existing Modolo setup), that's a 11 tooth spread.

The rear is a Shimano HG mountain cassette that's 30/13 teeth, that's a 17 tooth spread.

The total tooth spread is 11+17=28 teeth.
