re:Steel bars In category Tech issues Written by travelernj I ride a relatively budget, rigid mountain bike. It's 7005 T6 aluminium with a cromoly rigid fork. I don't ride serious off-road but I do ride 30-40 mile rides on rough country roads/trails regularly. As my ride times get longer I've noticed my hands getting a tad numb. Recently I was reading a review of a similar rigid mountain bike which talked about its steel bars being bad for the hands, the
Help me decide on a great commuter bike In category Tech issues Written by jellyphisher I'm in the process of trying to put together (or buy if there's one available) a great commuter/bad weather bike. I intend to use it mostly for commuting (12 miles each way in reasonably hilly terrain--takes me about 45-50 minutes), especially in rainy weather. When the weather is nice and the roads are clear, I'll probably ride my road bike instead. My 54cm Trek 5200 fits me like a glove, so I'
MTB rigid fork In category Tech issues Written by Jyro My wife will be taking a Jamis Exile (2003 all stock) eqipped with an Xtracycle on our touring vacation this summer. The Exile is a Reynolds 520 chromoly frame with a Manitou Axel suspension fork on it, and I was thinking she might like a rigid steel MTB fork for the trip. Any suggestions? I'd like to buy something that can do some offroad duty, and be comfortable.
re:expensive road bikes fussy and unreliable? In category Tech issues Written by jkrukoff i;ve seen it in here, "commuting on a racing bike is hard duty". but, if you are not really pounding the pedals, it seems to me that the only hard thing is mileage. my one way trip is 13 miles. i have a couple of mid price road/race bikes. a. 2002 fuji finest with sora group b. 1996 or so gt edge with 600 group what is about commuting that is supposed to be so hard? it;s just miles. i don;t
re:What wheels would you choose? In category Tech issues Written by thor0298 Aware that I'm treading on old ground again, and am aware of many of the pros and cons for the following choices, but I'm after opinions just the same: Two choices for wheels (clinchers, let's say): 1. Light conventional wheels (of type Mavic OP / Campag Rec / 15-16 DB, poss. 28sp) 2. Deep profile Carbon (of type Corima Aero 18-24 spoked) Both 1 and 2 have similar weights (700g front, 900g bac
Frame design questions In category Tech issues Written by originalstylee I'm in the market for a custom bike for randonneuring and fast-ish rides and would like for it to have fit and ride characteristics similar to my touring bike, which, for all its many and manifold virtues, is a pig at ~31 lbs. The fit should be fairly easy to clone, but the ride qualities are probably going to be more elusive. The bike to be cloned, a Thorn Nomad 595S, has a long wheelbase (108.
re:Do I want a cross bike for commuting? Help me decide? In category Tech issues Written by ccrider Maybe you guys can help me make a decision on what kind of bike I want? I already have a Habanero mt bike. Love it But Im yearning for something a bit "faster". Most al of my riding is back/forth to work. With an occasional weekend tour or ride However.... Ive been secretly thinking abt a week long tour someday. Don't know where... Having said all that.... what's everyone opinions on a cro
"Urbanite" steel touring or hybrid frame - any ha In category Tech issues Written by bmatson One option for replacing my broken Mikado (ptui) D'Iberville touring frame is this frame made for the Urbane Cyclist store here. Has the conventional horizontal top tube geometry and, because of the 132.5 rear spacing, will accept the LX hubs so I can just swap wheels over. Don't know about the straight (non curved) forks.
