Considering a Road bike for commuting... good idea?

I'm considering purchasing a new bicycle (Maybe $800 CDN total) to replace my nearly 8 year old Mongoose IBOC Pro mountain bike. I used to use it mainy for offroad but a knee injury stopped that, and in the past few years I've used it purely for commuting (10K's to school and back, 30-40K rides on weekends, stuff like that).

I am thinking about building up a frameset I have. The headtube measures
132mm and I will use a Shimano 600 threaded headset with a 1" threaded carbon fiber fork.

What steerer tube length would work best and how much of the top would need to be threaded?

Removing Crown Race, Campy Hidden..?

I have a Carbon Fiber fork that has the crown race from a Campy
Hiddenset. It happens to be a Cannondale Time fork. I'd like to install this fork on a bicycle with a regular, threadless headset and need to change the crown race.

The crown race not sits flat against the fork crown and there doesn't appear to be any edges to hammer on. How do I get it off without damaging the fork?

I have a new Kestrel EMS OS fork and new 2003 Chorus brake caliper.

The brake bolt is threaded except for about 1/4 inch just before the calipers. I can't get this last 1/4 inch of unthreaded brake bolt into the hole in the fork. The hole is too tight. The long brake bolt will not reach the threads so that I can pull this last bit in. I've tried squeezing the brake bolt in with a Quick Grip clamp
