re:Is all KMC 7.1 mm Z chain the same durability?
In category Tech issues
Written by barracci

I have been shopping for a new freewheel and chain for my 27* roadbike, Some of the internet sites are not really clear about which chain they are selling.

"Z" chain comes in several lengths and styles, do they all have the same pin and roller hardness?

Shifing problem with Dura Ace Bar End Shifters
In category Tech issues
Written by gamehendge420

My 9 speed shifter seems to be missing 3 clicks in the middle of its range.
The shifting is like being in friction mode in that range. Other indexed shifts on either end of this missing range are fine. Is there a shifting indexer that could be worn out inside it and can I fix it?

I have a Gunnar Crosshairs that will be on touring duty this summer, pulling a Burley Nomad trailer thru Spain. Right now, I have a Shimano
600 series gruppo on the bike, with a 48-39 crankset up front and an
8-speed Shimano Hyperglide cassette in the back, all road parts. At first, on the advice of a friend, I was planning on simply swapping the rear cassette for a MTB cassette, perhaps an LX o

Currently I use downtube shifters and I prefer them above all.
But I would like to place the shifters on the roadbar.
www.kellybike.com
www.paulcomb.com
www.forge-mtb.com
All have those kind of shifters but I cannot find any info on the max diameter they can take.
I want them directly next to the stem much like a mtb setup.
I suspect none of them have a large enough diameter for roadbars?
Perhaps

re:8 speed STI levers

I recall in an earlier thread a poster requested information on replacing an 8 speed Shimano Ultegra STI lever. These are no longer manufactured - only 9 speed is available. His concern was the cost of an upgrade to a complete 9 speed setup and was quite happy with his 8 speed casette, front & read derailleur and so on. The general concensus was that his only option was the 8 speed Sora STI le

old Suntour 6sp stem shifters...

I have a girlfriend who rides an old raleigh road bike with a triple on the front and a Shimano 6sp freewheel on the rear, operated by stem shifters in friction mode..She'd very much like index shifting but does not have the spare funds to upgrade to a newer bike [and she's quite happy with this bike], so I suggested she might be able to 'index' what she already has.

Am I right in saying that the

re:Better Barrel Adjusters

Does anyone have any suggestions for some higher quality replacement shifter cable barrel adjusters? The bike currently has down tube mounted adjusters and they have tended to corrode and look bad.

They also have the tendency to twist with every turn of the headset.
Unfortunately, they rarely twist and untwist in exactly the same amount which causes the shifter to constantly go out of adjustment

Question on Shimano Bar End Shifters

Written by ccrider

Just got a set of these. The box says they are 9 speed, but I can only hear/feel 8 distinct positions (excluding pushing the lever to it's extremes where it bumps into the housing). What am I missing? The enclosed manual also say it should only be used with a Dura Ace rear deraileur. I assume this is marketing to sell more Dura Ace, and not a hard requirement. My plan is to use it with a Deor
