re:Galled Bearing Cones Puzzle - Shimano FH-M510 Hub ??? In category General Written by FuzzyBunny666 In all of the bearings that I have repacked over my many years of cycling I have never seen this. I posted a previous question about bearing "roar" when the wheel was spun up on the work stand. A few folks mentioned that this was probably the freehub and not to worry. I finally got a chance to pull everything apart today. Both sides had plenty of grease on the wheel bearings. The non-drive side a
re:2nd-hand track bike - advice needed In category General Written by cstendal (X-POST: aus.bicycle, rec.bicycles.misc) I spotted this bike for sale and spoke to the owner. I'd like any opinions about such a setup as a beginner track bike: Track Bike with 22inch frame (55cm) Brooks saddle ($200AUD new?) re:Lance movie In category Racing Written by Jenkins Some day Hollywood will make a movie about Lances's 7 Tour de France victories. We all know, as cyclists, that it will bomb at the box office. Let's face it, if you arn't a cyclist you don't have a clue about what's going on in the TDF. So I don't expect the movie to be a high budget one, but I hope, and really pray, that Hollywood doesn't star Robin Williams as Lance.

re:What component should I splurge on? In category Racing Written by chucklynel I'm thinking of building a road bike from the ground up, and I want to do it on a budget. If you were to splurge on one or two components what would they be? Dereailur? Wheelset? Fork? Brakes? Also what components can I get away with going cheap on?
re:Duffer looking for a consistently decent tubular. Or not. In category Racing Written by rav7756 I am an ex-racer (very ex; think Strada 66s and Clement Setas in the 70s.) I still ride tubulars though, if only because my sole set of wheels has tubular rims (Ambrosio Durex Formula 20). I have this inertia going on here... Last year I flatted three times, out of the blue, like the valve had failed or something. This never happens to me, I usually wore tires out rather than puncture them. I rid

re:The Bikesmith, Seattle, shutting down In category Racing Written by mrswigon I was talking to Val Kleitz at the Bikesmith in Seattle today and he told me that he will have to go out of business in a couple of weeks. re:Say it aint so Shimano ... PART 2 In category Tech issues Written by travelernj Looks to me Japan-style price deflation is taking down prices of engineered bicycle components everywhere. Shimano isn't the only component-maker trying to prop up prices to stay alive. See the recent notice from Chris King, listed below, for another desperate attempt to maintain prices in the market channel. Perhaps new Chinese components will be hitting the USA mainland soon ?? - Don Gillies

re:Do slightly bent spokes matter? In category Tech issues Written by KNTain I got a new set of Ultegra/Open Pro wheels from SuperGo the other day and I found that two spokes of the front wheel are bent slightly. The two spokes are bent at the section between the 2nd and 3rd cross (cross 3 pattern). Also, this wheel is slightly out of true. Should I send them back or just true the wheel and live with the bent spokes?

Weight limits on racy MTB wheelsets? In category Tech issues Written by blr Hey all... what's the word on light wheelsets? Is 1700 grams in the stupid light category for race XC wheelsets? re:Building up bike--what should I get LBS to do? In category Tech issues Written by jbass66 I'm building up a new Ti road bike with Centaur triple 10spd components and was wondering what I should tackle myself, and what it would be better to have a local lbs do for me. re:Death of a Viscount? In category Tech issues Written by Riet I know, I know: Viscounts (English, mine circa 1975 in the "Trusty" era) get no respect, and for good reason -- the "death fork" recall, the proprietary Viscount-branded components that were good in theory (hubs & BB with sealed bearings) but not durable, the BB not easily replaced by modern ones, the soft dropouts (in some models), and "aerospace" tubing of an alloy no one ever heard of that

Apology (was A physicist's question about tensioning a whee In category Tech issues Written by GringoStarr I posted a message to this thread (about hubs standing on spokes) late last night which was uncalled for and which I'd like to apologise for (particularly to Jobst). re:Efficient dynamo regulators In category Tech issues Written by barracci I gather that the Busch & Muller Dymotec S6 and the Lightspin dynamo both incorporate some sort of advanced regulator that is more efficient than the ordinary Zener type that can waste energy, even at low speeds. Does anyone know how these work? I read a previous post that suggested it would be possible to use active components to build a 'low-dropout rectifier'. Another approach is not to li
Coaster brake theory In category Tech issues Written by KNTain Okay, I just got my first coaster brake today: a Sachs Torpedo singespeed hub. I take the sucker apart and have a look at how it works. There's a big golden collar which expands against the shell when backpedaled. Okay, mystery solved for today, but it begs the question, why don't these things eat through the shell in mere months if they operate on this principle? Is there something else going
Is it worth getting frame cold set? In category Tech issues Written by ccrider I'm starting the process of redoing my 14 year old touring bike, and changing from Suntour 7 speed to Shimano 9 speed in the process. The rear is spaced at 130mm. Certainly I can go with Shimano road hubs, but is it worth getting the rear respaced to 135mm so mt bike hubs will fit? I assume a stronger wheel can be built with the wider mt bike hub. Is there any issue with the 10mm axle diameter
re:Vintage Jack Taylor tandem rear dropout spacing In category Tech issues Written by Pink I have a 1965 Jack Taylor Sports Tandem that I recently aquired. Upon tearing down the frame and taking some measurements, it appears that the rear dropout spacing is 126mm! re:Most of the Friction In A Bicycle Chain In category Tech issues Written by hatfieldd Someone on sci.engr.mech said a chain sprocket system was over 95% efficient at transmitting power -- better than a belt drive. I'm guessing most of the friction is between the pins and the links as they wrap around the sprocket. The friction would increase directly with rpm and with tension in the chain -- in other words, the % friction would remain constant over all power ranges. 5% might not
re:Price of the Mavic MA-2 rims. (outrageous) In category Tech issues Written by Yamcha Hibiki Gosh I just saw what a pair of Mavic MA-2's are worth today. Mavic Helium Rim replacement question In category Tech issues Written by The Creator I bought a pair of Helium clinchers on Ebay and the rear rim is missing a grommet and is cracked. re:Chris King Hubs & Lockrings In category Tech issues Written by matten I've just built up a set of new mtb wheels with Chris King Hubs. When it came time to fix a 9-spd XT cluster (11T cog on the bottom) I found that the Shimano lock ring does not have enough threads to engage the drive shell. re:Reliability/durability of internal gear hub? In category Tech issues Written by thersupermikey ...or any other internal gear hub? I've been using a Sturmey Archer AW for ages and have been finally considering a Spectro P5 (or S7) for wider range. re:Noisy Open Pro rim In category Tech issues Written by Daisetsu Hi all Recently I have noticed an annoying creak coming from the back of the bike. It has now reached the stage that its too much of an annoyance to ride with. After much fiddling & swapping parts I have tracked it to the back wheel. re:Disappointed by Dura-Ace In category Tech issues Written by bodhidharma Is anyone else disappointed by Dura-Ace 10sp? Shimano always brags about their innovation, but I see no innovation at all in Dura-Ace 10sp. Just high prices for a product that will not make me go any faster or enjoy riding my bicycle any more. It seems that all the components are just *SLIGHTLY* better versions of Dura-Ace 9sp. That might be fine if the prices were just *SLIGHTLY* higher, but
re:Disk road/cross bike for winter training In category Tech issues Written by thersupermikey I'm thinking about a disk brake cross bike for primarily winter road riding. I've read the previous related threads. The roads are covered with cinders or sand in the winter, and rim brakes work poorly, eat through rims and pads, and
Upgrading from DT to STI, 7 to 8 speed In category Tech issues Written by Void* I'm contemplating upgrading my 7-speed DT to 8 speed STI. I believe some RSX shifters were 7-speed, but it seems most were 8. If I go this route, I would need new brakes (I have single-pivot now) at least, but would I need to replace my wheel or hub or freehub? I was under the impression that 7 and 8-speed cog spacing is the same, so they could be interchanged easily, but the hub spacing is 130
Which side of the flange for lacing disc hubs? In category Tech issues Written by SPOONS I see that Sheldon has a paragraph or so about the trailing spokes running up along the inside of the flange.
