How does drivetrain frictional drag change with speed?

Do watts generated create the same losses regardless of gearing?

Is it save to put a wide tires NOKIAN W240 (28x1 5/8x1 ¾ (40-622)) on the

re:Tandem Tires

Are 700X23c tires suitable for a tandem? My tandem originally had very narrow tires. I had them swapped out for 700X37 before I picked the bike up. Time for new tires, I would prefer something a bit narrower, but I read somewhere that 700X25 was the smallest size recommended for tandems. Any experience/opinions? I can always use the 23's onmy road bike, but want to put them on the tandem if s

Same question as for the 32C version: is this a true 28mm tire (I hope), or do these still run small?

re:Beloki losing rear tire... Tubular problem?
In category Tech issues
Written by erebus

When reading that Beloki had rolled his rear tire, it brought to mind two things; first, Jobst's assertions that tubulars are bad in the alps due to melting glue, and second, that heavy rear braking in that situation has been discussed as a bad thing in this group. He was also using an 18mm tire. Interesting, when some using clinchers don't seem slowed at all, and he might not have so many broke

re:2 Q's: touring & Surly

2 questions relating to touring bikes:

(1) Why is it that touring bikes so often have cantilever brakes? Ease of repair? Allowing larger tires?

(2) Does anyone know when Surly's Long Haul Trucker is going to be in stores?

Westwood rims -- 559mm

Written by KNTain

Okay, I'm in the works for getting an old roadster. "Old" being the key word here--it has 584mm rims (Called "Krondäck," 'round here). I would like to have plenty of options for tyres on this bike, so I figure that 559mm rims are the way to go. However, it uses Westwood rims and I'd like to keep it that way.

Is there such a beast as a 559 Westwood rim? Google isn't turning up much of anythin

new front end - carbon fork ?'s

i've ridden my 54cm scapin el-os for going on 10 years now, mostly with great pleasure (except for the hills). on occasion however (loooong rides), i'd suffer numbness and/or tingling in my hands despite cork tape, a 25mm tire, and padded gloves (even gel for a while...too squishy). anyway, a great deal just surfaced on an ouzo pro carbon fork, so i snapped it up. as a result, the whole front e

I have 700 x 35 tires on my hybrid bike, and I've recently learned that I can change the 35 (width?) to a different size, ie. 32, 28 etc.
Question is, do I want to? I ride exclusively on pavement in a city, so I'd like to maximize tire efficiency for this type of driving.

- First of all, will it work to put different width tires on my hybrid/city bike, or is there an issue with narrower widths co

Though I've been critical of Grant Peterson's effort to revive centerpull brakes, I have to admit that the latest Rivendell Reader (#30) gave me reasons to pause.

First of all, in the letters section, a reader (Thomas Papetti) points out that dual-pivot sidepulls won't track an out-of-true rim the way all other brake types will. I'm not sure how much that counts in favor of centerpulls (Papetti d

I had a mavic ma3 rim 36 spoke with good spokes on a campy hub on the rear.
now I am a heavy rider (right now about 238 with up to 15 or so pounds on my back. I use a 25mm tire with full 120 or close pressure.
my last rim was getting out of true a lot and a new derailer slipped a bit and chewed up the spokes so I replaced the spokes and rim with the ma3.
after about 700 or so miles of daily com
