re:Help with purchase In category Racing Written by Gaia Hey all. I am at a turning point in the bike purchasing world. I have 4 options I am looking at: They range in price and function. They are (in no particular order): 1. Cervelo soloist 105 - ~$1700 2. Trek 2300 (2003) - ~$1500 sale 3. Lemond Buenos Aires - ~$1200 sale 4. Serotta Fierte - ~$2000 (105 group) I know the cervelo does not really belong in this group but I like the ride. How will
re:New Trek OCLV Frame? In category Racing Written by tkuhlman Another thead about SRM - and this frame caught my eye. Rear "V" seat stays like a Madone, with the front tubing of a 5900. No semi-aero tubing. What bike is this? I do like the rear "V" rather than the traditional wishbone that comes on the 5500/5900. Anybody have the scoop on this?
re:Team OYB National Tour: first strike! In category Racing Written by doug12 Well, we're on the road now. First we drove thru Chicago. What a great shoreline scene they have there! It was cool seeing all the rental pedicabs in action and the great variety of cyclists along the shore. It reminded me of a new bike book I just saw: "The Complete Bike Book" by DK. I flipped thru their chapter on bike types and saw they had downhill and slalom bikes but no citybikes or recumbe
ARMSTRONG CRASHED! In category Racing Written by moses Can we finally stop assuming that Lance has won this race by default? I want him to win, but I certainly don't think the race was decided before it started. We have no idea what the course has in store for the riders today, and for the rest of the tour.
re:Bianchi's are a fine brand and I love them In category Racing Written by jens This is so lame. Nobody cares, and if they did care, why would anyone take your word for it when you publish this in a forum that Bianchi can't reply to? You got the exact result anyone reasonable would expect. Granted, most others would say, "darn", right after my friggin' warranty expired" and that would be the end of it. In fact, things like that have happened to me and I am sure just about eve
re:"Poor" David Millar In category Racing Written by jlawhea World Champ. Over a minute and a half up. That was some ride.
Who is this cyclist? In category Racing Written by kyptin I found an article online about a cyclist (a Brit I think) who invented a new bike and position called the Praying Mantis. He won some races with it, so the UCI banned the bike. I thought this is interesting... I'll read it later. Now I can't find it. Anyone know where it is?
re:Compact crankset versus triple In category Racing Written by PhishyPhil420 I live in the San Francisco East Bay where it is very hilly I have just ordered a new bike frame that should arrive next week. I the meantime, I need to decide on my crankset. I am installing a 200 Campy Chorus Triple Gruppo and am considering using the FSA Pro Elit Compact crankset (50/34) instead of the Chorus triple (52/42/30?). I a looking for other members' experiences and recommendations re
re:Dumb question about bicycle adverts. In category Racing Written by Drowtales In every ad I have seen for road bikes, the bike is shown without pedals. In ads, either in magazines or on the web, for bikes that are shipped complete with all parts, they also don't include pedals. Why is this--why pedals, opposed to some other part of the bike?

re:The Carmichael Spin In category Racing Written by rollin So is it the new bike or the aging body that caused the power/performance problem at 25-30 km? July is going to be very interesting.
re:Ultegra v. Dura Ace In category Racing Written by *lostindark* I am in the market place for a new bike and I am considering the differences between Ultegra and Dura Ace. I used to race road bikes (Cat IV) about 12-15 years ago, and my old bike was equipped with Dura Ace components. I really loved Dura Ace compared to the old Shimano 600 (which I undertand was replaced by Ultegra). My question is: what is most peoples' experience with the difference betwee
re:Newbie ?'s In category Racing Written by jesseforget New rider here(sort of). I have been riding bikes on and off since a young kid, but nothing serious. I just bought an old vitus in decent condition, had it tuned up. It is a nice light ride, best bike I can afford right now. Unfortunately it is a bit on the small side for me 52cm; I am 6'0 tall. It's not terribly uncomfortable, but definately could be better. I like getting on a bike and speeding
re:Klein vs. Trek In category Racing Written by Scapegoat My wife just joined a racing team and we're considering either the 2004 Trek 5200 or 2004 Klein Q-Pro XV. They are both similarly priced, and both will be available end of October. Both use Shimano Ultegra components, and both use Bontrager Race Lite wheels. Which bike would you choose? Thanks in advance, PS: Some specs below: sizes 49cm, 52cm, 54cm, 56cm, 58cm, 61cm color Silve
re:$600 vs. $6000 bike In category Racing Written by johnnyk TDF is over, so I assume it's safe to post this without flames. What's the mph difference between a Trek 1000 with Aurora wheels and a Trek 5900 with Zipp wheels? How much faster will one go if he or she pays the extra $5400 assuming you are pedalling with the same power? Will somebody go down to your local Trek dealer tomorrow and test this out.
re:Bike too heavy for MF RR? In category Racing Written by percyhill This might sound like a dumbass-masters-fattie-Fred question, but I bought my entry-level Giant road bike in 2000 and it weighs 12kg (26.4 lb) with the pump, small seatpack (containing tube, multi-tool, levers, and patches), speedo/HRM, and two bottle cages. These days you can buy road bikes for not much more money than I paid (admittedly not much) that weigh less than 3/4 of that (i.e. < 9kg
re:The Bikesmith, Seattle, shutting down In category Racing Written by mrswigon I was talking to Val Kleitz at the Bikesmith in Seattle today and he told me that he will have to go out of business in a couple of weeks. That's a real loss because he runs a very capable and responsive LBS. Everyone in the area that can should try to get over there and give him some business as soon as you can. It may not be too late to save the business. http://www.thebikesmith.com PS. I am n
re:Bicycle Mechanic Humor In category Tech issues Written by KNTain You need only two tools. WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape. This may be a test for some but the rest of you should at least crack a smile.
re:convert a bicycle In category Tech issues Written by KNTain I have an older Schwinn road bicycle that I would like to convert to a comfort hybrid bicycle. What would it take to accomplish such a conversion? I am not that knowledgable about bicycles, but, I find the ride on the road bike to be uncomfortable. I would rather sit upright than bending over all the time. I do not ride that often.
re:How are Integrated Headsets so different? In category Tech issues Written by chatwood2 In reading through past postings I have discovered that many people do not like the Integrated Headsets used by Litespeed and other manufactures. I have read Chris Kings views and while the reasoning behind his views makes sense, I believe that some manufactures have already addressed the biggest problem. At first I was skeptical, but through a couple phone calls I was able to find out that Litesp
GP 3000 25mm vs 23mm In category Tech issues Written by doug2420 I've used GP 3000, 23mm and was pretty happy with them - sticks good, no punctures, probably got somewhere around 1300 or 1400 miles out of the rear. I thought I was getting close to the end, and I wanted to try out the 25mm size, so I got pair and put them on. Turned out that even though the rear 23mm had a pretty wide flat spot worn down, there was still plenty of tread left. Not sure how mu
re:How to make my cheap bike faster...cheaply In category Tech issues Written by Sarcastic Apostle I have a Trek 1000 (2001) all stock. Yes it is LOWWWW end everything, but it has served it's purpose thus far. I race recreationaly in non-drafting races, sprint triathlons mostly. I want to make my bike faster, but not spend more than I spent on the actual bike. (Yes, I am working on making myself faster) I'm looking at getting Performance Titan wheels which are lighter, more aero, are less
re:Benefits of huge numbers of rear cogs (was Chain outside wi In category Tech issues Written by abbsci420 I've recently got myself a new hill bike - a Cannondale Jekyll 700 - after riding a Scott Sawtooth for fifteen years. Mostly I love the Cannondale, but I find myself wondering what the point of nine cogs on the back really is. I find that if I tackle a steep slope on any normal surface (gravel, mud, dirt) I'm losing traction long before I've got down into the bottom gear (which is substantially lo
re:Campy 8 speed to 9 speed? In category Tech issues Written by abbsci420 I got hit by a car last week and the bike is wrecked and I was very lucky with minor injuries so not complaining too much!! My Campy Record 8 speed levers (1996 vintage) have been smashed as well as a CAAD4 frame. Insurance forces me to go through the LBS and he is sourcing 9 speed levers. I can either let him downgrade them to 8 speed to work with my current drivetrain which is intact or upgrad
re:Cycle Component Upgrade - Opinions In category Tech issues Written by iluvphish Last spring I purchased my first bike - an 03 Specialized Sequoia Sport http://www.specialized.com/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=6001&JServSessionIdroot=qb6i6lxaow.j27005 It is a terrific first bike, and I cycled over 2K road miles for the year. My goal for 04 is 3K+. I just wanted to solicit some advise from the cycling veterans on possible improvements that I can make to the components. Are there
re:bad experience with a bike shop In category Tech issues Written by Pink Has anyone had bad experiences with bike shops, theres this little biek shop down the road, its been there for over 30 years, and a friend broke a axel on his bike, so we went in to get a new one, the guy we talked to said it would be better to just buy a whole new rim. For $45, that didnt sound right so we left. A little while before that I went in and asked what they had for low end dual suspens
re:Q about DA 10 Speed In category Tech issues Written by twistedemotions Someone on our ride on Saturday said that if you need a new bottom bracket for whatever reason with the new DA 10 speed, that you'd have to replace the entire crank. Has anyone else heard this or does it make any sense? I know that the axle is permanently attached to the right crank, but how does the rest of the assemble work?
re:Trek 5200 - 5900 - Madone 5.9 In category Tech issues Written by bodhidharma I have been riding a Trek 5200 Stock from the factory for about 1 1/2 years 5000 miles. I average about 19 MPH riding alone on a good mix of flats and hills. Rides range between 20 and 50 miles. My average speed on group rides is 20.5 MPH. Do you think I will gain anything with the purchase of either the 5900 or the Madone 5.9. I have heard many different opinions from the members of the bike club
re:Stem is losing from the handlebar In category Tech issues Written by lovebug_kiss Just got a new bike (Union Flyer 2002 helios) with full suspension, and when I drive on the trail for a while, the Stem is losing from the handlebar and ofcourse I lose control of the bike, I tried to tighten it but keep losing... is there an Add ons that I could install to fix this problem?
Swapping out Ultegra for Record 10 w/ FSA crank In category Tech issues Written by sea_dawg My new bike came with FSA Carbon Pro Team Issue cranks and Shimano Ultegra. I want to swap out the Ultegra for the Record 10 on my old bike. Anyone know if the cranks are compatible? I couldnt' find any info on the FSA Web site.
First maintenance of a new bike In category Tech issues Written by TrAns13nT2 What special maintenance should be done on a new bike during the first 1000 km? Comes to my mind: -retighten cranks (though some people say don't) -check that wheels are true and spokes ok Funnily enough, at sheldonbrown there is an "Old Bikes" section but no "New Bikes" section.
Upgrade older cannondale Hybrid In category Tech issues Written by Travis Mcgee I've got a 91 H600 that's in need of another rebuilding at 40k miles. Right now it has all 21 speed LX components with the rear spacing at the old mtn bike size of 130mm. All I see in that size now are road hubs. Would it work to put an 8 or 9 speed Ultegra or 105 hub? If I went that route would the matching road derailler work with the newer XT shifters? I imagine I'd also be needing a new cr
re:Taping the frame In category Tech issues Written by ccrider This might sound strange. I would like to wrap my bike frame with any non-sticky tapes in order to make the look of the bike uglier. I wanna do that while touring in Cuba, so its fleshy green look would not attract much attention of petit thefts. Nevertheless, I want to be able to pill the tapes off after the trip without leaving sticking glues/stuff on the frame. Any suggestion? Thanks!
re:What Bike To Buy In category Tech issues Written by Phrantic OK, I am going to buy a bike. I need it for transportation mainly and dont know much about bikes. Most days I am going to ride 4 miles (I know that is very short but with an 5-10 lb. backpack and I need to get there preety fast). 2 miles each way from college to my house. I am also thinking of joining an bike group so I guess it shouldnt just be for short rides. I can only spend around 800 dollars
re:Good wheels for a Lemond Poprad In category Tech issues Written by TransMan I have a Lemoond Poprad (2003) and it is my first cycle cross bike. I also have recently bent my back wheel a bit. You know, those dang curbs always in the way. But, I took it in to get it fixed and they did the best they could do, but, it isn't perfect. So, it isn't going to last for the long run. To my question: I am now looking for a replacement. Yeah, it kinda sucks to have to look for new wh

re:rusted headset In category Tech issues Written by blackdeath Have a Trek hybrid about 14 months old. Took it in for a tuneup and headset replacement was recommended as it was "notched". Was very noticable, so I believe it was true. As they try to replace it I'm told its so rusted they "can't get it apart". Going to soak it overnight and see if it frees up. OK, I'm no mechanic, but for you experts, what does this really mean? If it can't be removed / ta
re:Good steel framebuilders in Seattle area? In category Tech issues Written by Golgi301 I'm building a new Ti bike to replace my 22 year old Trek, which has a way-bent fork and a frame that's got some rust spots and is possibly slightly bent as well. I look forward to riding my new bike but I'd like to eventually restore my Trek. Could someone recommend a good steel framebuilder in the Seattle, WA area to take a look at my frame and tell me what shape it's in, what if anything could
re:weight of trek 2300 frame only? In category Tech issues Written by meeks anybody happen to know what an old (90's) trek 2300 carbon/AL frame weighs? Most of the components and bearings are just about worn out, and I need to make a decision to replace everything, or start looking around to buy a new bike complete, or build something custom on a new frame. seems like the new carbon or carbon-ti frames are in the 2.75 to 3 pound range, but I have no idea what my old fra
re:where to get new 8sp STI lever? Optimal Rim Width for Tire Size In category Tech issues Written by stgrlee14 Okay, I have seen the chart on Sheldon Brown's web site. I have followed the link on his site back to his source for the chart: http://tandem-fahren.de/Technik/Reifentips/index.html I am curious about the source of the data used to generate these charts. I suspect that the data was generated from 4-wheeled vehicles where the tires are maintained normal to the road surface and where side loads ar
re:Labor charge on headset install In category Tech issues Written by fC What is a reasonable charge to install a headset on a frame/fork with no headset present? I was quoted$40 at a local LBS- not including the headset. Seems high to me. Any comment would be appreciated.
re:Shift cable adjusters, Ultegra/DA/? In category Tech issues Written by mkov311 I was adjusting the shift cables on my new bike today, for the first time. It has an Ultegra triple group with the usual downtube cable stops. The right side (rear shift) has a neat little lever thingie that gives a whole range of adjustment in half a turn, while the left side has the usual barrel adjuster. I've never had the little lever thing. I like it. It's much easier to use while riding,
re:Frame builders? In category Tech issues Written by Mizuiro Over the last 13 years I've bought 3 used bicycles. First a Schwinn Prelude, then a Trek 1100, and the latest, a Cannondale R900STI. The 'Dale is seven years old now, with 45,000 miles. I'm in the mood for a new bike. But since I ride 6000 - 7000 miles each year I'm considering treating myself to a custom built frame. Last month an acquaintance discussed his experience getting fitted for a Spectr
Ultegra Brifter: Play in Break Lever In category Tech issues Written by Attatoy I have a fairly new bike with the Ultegra triple group. I have ridden around 1500 miles. I noticed today that the rear brake lever has some play. Around 1/8" measured at the top lever opening and probably a 1/4" plus if measured at the end of the lever. The brake cable is tight and no movement of the cable occurs during this initial lever travel. The front lever does not have any play in the brak
