re:Safe descents?
In category Racing
Written by JuankiMan

Is there any such thing?

I feel pretty comfortable descending a 7% grade. I usually try not to go too fast, about 45mph without using my brakes. But a while ago I went to Park
City, and found myself climbing a 10% grade. Which was fine until I started going down. The only way to keep a slow enough speed was to ride my brakes, or speed up and then stop. I came to a complete stop several times on t

re:The real reason behing the UCI's tech decisions

Written by Digit

The UCI just handed down a ruling banning the use of disc brakes on 'cross bikes. Manufacturers are baffled by this decision, as many 'cross racers have been specifically asking for disc brakes for their better performance in adverse conditions.

"Stu Thorne, owner of cyclocross.com and sponsor of a handful of

re:Customising you bike

Written by tkuhlman

Just need some advice about customising my new racing bike.

The problem is that it is a 54cm/21.5 inch frame and I should really have a 58cm frame for my height. It was such a good deal second-hand that I went for it.

What can I do to make sure I get this bike as close as possible to fitting me?

What are the main issues with a too small bike?

Should I just cut my losses and get a bigger one?

re:"That's as much $$ as a car!"

Talking with a guy at work today. We were watching the TDF and I mentioned that I was thinking of getting a new racing bike since mine was getting older.
He asked how much it would cost and I calmly said; "OH, about $7,000."
He said: "That's as much as a car!" To which I replied; Hey, the kind I buy that's seven cars!"

Written by Sartan Cat

How many of us followed the Grande Boucle Feminine in August, which looks as if it was at least as interesting as the TDF? Why is women's cycling so poorly covered by the media? Because they don't go as far or as fast as the men? The competition is just as exciting, just as women skiing or tennis is just as exciting (sometimes much more exciting) than the men's competition, even if they don't h

My wife just joined a racing team and we're considering either the 2004 Trek

Which bike would you choose?

Something I stumbled on today.

The title of the album, Disraeli Gears, was actually a bit of an inside joke. Eric had been thinking of getting a racing bike, and was discussing it with Ginger, when Mick Turner, one of the roadies, commented on the performance of "those Disraeli Gears" meaning to say
"derailleur gears". The lads thought this was hilarious and decided that it should be the title of

The question came up on a ride the other day: can one climb stairs on foot faster than on a road bike?

The answer I found, after some googling, is that the winner is too close to call. The fastest time to climb the Empire State Building to the 86th floor is just under 10 minutes, which is a climb rate of
100 feet/minute.

Pantani's record climb of Mt. Ventoux was done in about 25 minutes, giving

I recently read Sheldon Brown's intriguing proposal for a universal system of gear comparison which he calls "gain ratio" (name attributed to someone else. see http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gain.html). What do others think of it and why hasn't the system gained more "traction" in the cycling world. Or has it?

As an engineer, I am attracted to the unit-less-ness of it, though I haven't yet figured o

*the* Mercier and Motobecane lines traditionally associated with quality bikes and (2) if there are any reasons to be suspicious of the legitimacy of these offers?

Really fast tire wear?

Written by wyver

When I got my racing bike the tires were in good shape. They are 700x25 well at the time I was about 265. I had a slow leak and sometimes the tires were a bit low and that caused the sidewall to shred. Well my buddy gave me another pair (can't remember what brand but they were good quality) and I kept them inflated. I used them for about two months 20 miles a day 100 miles a week. Sometimes I h

Although I agree that a touring bike is better for routine touring use, there is absolutely no need one can't tour on a racing bike.

The additional 35lbs to a bike will have no effect on the frame. Statements like that are speculative, and not proven by any fact. The heel clearance is an issue, but there are setups and panniers that will accomadate that problem.

Ok, so we've pretty well beaten the weight issue to death, with the conclusion of it really doesn't matter that much - a 500g saving is a 500g saving, but the fact that its on the wheels instead of the frame (or drink bottle, or pump, or me) doesn't make any real difference.

So, the remaining motivation to go and spend some of my beloved savings on a new set of wheels

40mm (total reach - really!), they have eccentric pad position adjusters, they're very compact and "aero", and the pads are small and teardrop shaped.
