Is it worth getting frame cold set? In category Tech issues Written by ccrider I'm starting the process of redoing my 14 year old touring bike, and changing from Suntour 7 speed to Shimano 9 speed in the process. The rear is spaced at 130mm. Certainly I can go with Shimano road hubs, but is it worth getting the rear respaced to 135mm so mt bike hubs will fit? I assume a stronger wheel can be built with the wider mt bike hub. Is there any issue with the 10mm axle diameter
new shimano road pedals and old look style shoes In category Tech issues Written by brtmkm I'm interested in upgrading my current Look style Shimano pedals (PD-6401) with the latest Ultegra pedals (PD-R600). I plan to continue using my Look shoes which currently have the Look red cleats mounted. The shoes only accept the Look style cleats (ie. three bolt pattern, one in front, two in back). Can anyone confirm that the new cleats will fit the same bolt pattern as the old cleats? I have
re:Anyone with Dura-ace 7701 or Ultegra Crankset? Q-Factor? In category Tech issues Written by Phrantic Does anyone with a DA 7701 or Ultegra double crankset know what the Q-factor is?
re:Cantilever brake set-up question: In category Tech issues Written by sjannasch What is the best way to set-up Cantilever brakes between a straddle cable and carrier, or to use the Z-Link wire? Does one have the advantage/disadvantage over the other? This is for a road bike: I have the Dia Compe 986 brakes and will be using them with Dia Compe SS7 levers on a Rivendell curved "Dove" bar. (just a city bike) I may in the future go with a drop bar and Shimano road aero (non-ST
Changed Gearing, Easier Climbing In category Tech issues Written by songswt A recreational club rider, I climb the hilly, rolling terrain around here (SE Pennsylvania) not too badly, but sometimes wish I had one more gear to shift into when the hills get too long and I slow down to the mid-single digits. More of a masher than a spinner, I ride a Lemond Buenos Aires with 105 triple components; the front chainrings are, I think, 30-42-52 (but I rarely use the 52), and on th
re:different chain rings on Shimano road double and triple cran In category Tech issues Written by wayned 1) Does anyone know why Shimano puts different rings on road triples than on road doubles? Doubles seem to come with 53/39 combos, while triples come with 52/42/30. This seems odd to me; why not just add a third ring and leave the other two the same? Is it a silly marketing thing, or is there a good technical reason for this? So of course, I'd like to change the rings on a recently acquired Ulteg
MTB crankset upgrade In category Tech issues Written by valek I wish to upgrade the crankset on my MTB. The current crankset is a very low end steel model. I would like the replacement to have the same triple ring ratio (48/38/28) - yes I ride mainly on the road rather than dirt. Unfortunately the standard for MTB chainsets tends to be something like 44/32/22. I am thinking of either Shimanao Nexave T411 which comes in (48/38/28) - but are the rings replac
