re:Klein vs. Trek In category Racing Written by Scapegoat My wife just joined a racing team and we're considering either the 2004 Trek 5200 or 2004 Klein Q-Pro XV. They are both similarly priced, and both will be available end of October. Both use Shimano Ultegra components, and both use Bontrager Race Lite wheels. Which bike would you choose? Thanks in advance, PS: Some specs below: sizes 49cm, 52cm, 54cm, 56cm, 58cm, 61cm color Silve
re:Adjusting Campag Gears In category Racing Written by Sor Everytime I change chain & cassette, I have a terrible job to get gear selection adjusted successfully on all 9 cogs. I'm using the official Campag 9-speed chain, Mirage cassette, and Mirage 9-speed rear mech with matching ergos, so you'd think it would all mesh beautifully together, but it doesn't. If I adjust for the small cogs, I find the gear changes are imprecise for the larger cogs and v
re:Building a touring drivetrain In category Tech issues Written by abbsci420 I have a Gunnar Crosshairs that will be on touring duty this summer, pulling a Burley Nomad trailer thru Spain. Right now, I have a Shimano 600 series gruppo on the bike, with a 48-39 crankset up front and an 8-speed Shimano Hyperglide cassette in the back, all road parts. At first, on the advice of a friend, I was planning on simply swapping the rear cassette for a MTB cassette, perhaps an LX o
Triplizers In category Tech issues Written by 688state Does anyone know if it is possible to get some sort of triplizer to fit a 1999 Shimano Ultegra (9) double chainset ? Judging from the pictures it looks like the Stronglight one will not work as the inside face of the crank is not flush, there are 'shelves' on which the inner (on a double) chainring sits I have read the pages on Harris Cyclery but can't see any details about compatibility.

re:pedals with clips In category Tech issues Written by NathanCollins This Spring I purchased Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL pedals and new shoes. The cleats are almost worn out and the shoes are coming apart. Also I couldn't release and fell on a tour. I am fed up with clipless pedals and am going to try toe clips and a good pedal from Rivendell. Do you all think that this will make that much performance difference?
re:Help: Shifting Problems In category Tech issues Written by SideShowBob36 I just installed the Specialite TA 38T chainring onto my Shimano Ultegra triple crankset. I have no problem upshifting from the smaller chainrings to the larger chainrings. However, I can't get the chain to downshift from the 38t to the 30t chainring. Can anyone help me with this problem. Here are my drive train components. Shimano Ultegra 6501 Shifters Shimano Ultegra Triple Bottom Bracket
re:Campy cassettes w/o lock ring? In category Tech issues Written by ChaosDRF I noticed on Campy's site that their road cassettes don't seem to come with lock rings. They claim that since freehubs come with them, there was no need to supply them w/cassettes. Is this true? I recently bought a new Mavic Cosmos wheelset on sale (Colorado Cyclist, $200) and they don't appear to have a lock ring. Are Campy cassettes compatible with the Cosmos hub, and if so where do I get a lock
re:8 speed STI levers In category Tech issues Written by fC I recall in an earlier thread a poster requested information on replacing an 8 speed Shimano Ultegra STI lever. These are no longer manufactured - only 9 speed is available. His concern was the cost of an upgrade to a complete 9 speed setup and was quite happy with his 8 speed casette, front & read derailleur and so on. The general concensus was that his only option was the 8 speed Sora STI le
re:Where the heck do these washers go???? In category Tech issues Written by rufus Today I was removing the chainrings from my new Shimano Ultegra crankset, the FC-6500 model. It wasn't until I had the last chainring bolt off that I realized that very thin washers were dropping from the crankset as I removed the chainring nuts and bolts. Because I wasn't paying attention I'm not sure where these things go. It *looks* like they go under the head of the bolt, but none of the Sh
Differences in Trek Model years? In category Tech issues Written by Silena What are the differences in the 5200/5500 frames/forks (other than paint schemes) in models from 1999- 2004? How about the differences in the shimano Ultegra group on the 5200 in those years?

re:sachs ergopower + shimano ultegra rd In category Tech issues Written by funboy i want to put ergo/sti levers on my triathlon bike. but cause i´m a student i got a very small budget. my bike got an 8speed dura ace cassette and a 9speed shimano ultegra rear rd. is it possible to use sachs ergopower to shift? i know that campa produces the sachs ergos, but i think i heard that the index is for shimano 8speed dr. i am shure that the 9speed ultegra works with a shimano 8speed i
Campy - Shimano compatability and twist-lacing In category Tech issues Written by harbar I'm e-looking at a bike with Record 9-speed shifters, Record 9-speed rear der., and a Shimano Ultegra 9-speed cassete. Will this work smoothly or should I expect compatability issues? Also, I'm totally unfamiliar with twist-laced spokes on a wheelset. What would be the benefits and disadvantages?

re:shimano pedals PD-A515 and also Shimano multi-release cleat In category Tech issues Written by USEnfield I am looking to buy my very first set of clip-less pedals for a Trek 1000 road bike (2004 model). One pedal type recommended by the bicycle shop was a Shimano PD-A515 (weight 338 grams, single-side clip). I read some reviews on www.roadbikereview.com and it was not conclusive - some folks hated them and some loved them.... So I am looking for any additional good/bad/ugly opinions on this pedal, a
setting chainline question In category Tech issues Written by Nickslk i'm building up a new bike from parts on an older bike that i have. i' going from a triple to a double crank because i got a good deal on beautiful aluminum shimano ultegra crank. compared to the cheaper tripl with steel rings there's no contest. shimano specs a 113mm bb for roa double cranks and 115mm for road doubles with an overly large seat tube my seat tube is 1.25" (not sure if this is large
DA 10 is very Nice! In category Tech issues Written by schwarzt I just picked up my bike from the lbs. I bought my daughter a new frame. She got my DA 9 speed stuff, the DA 10 went on my frame And that is a big deal for me. I crashed this summer and my right hand is very weak. Occasionally (when cold) I was unable to shift w/o reaching around the bars and grabbi
Help with FDer on Road Bike In category Tech issues Written by rift My wife has a Lotus (talk about ancient) road bike. I installed a new chain as she has some chain wear. The chain was the same size as the original (same Shimano chain), but I am having this problem that she is yelling at me about ("Why the hell did you break my bike?"). The problem is that the front derailleur metal cage-thing is not centered around the chain, but rather rubs against the left ri
Shimano STI brifter: extra click? In category Tech issues Written by mikegordon I recently bought a road bike with a double crank and Shimano Ultegra brifters. When I shift from the small to big chainring, it takes two clicks. If I do both clicks at the same time, the shift is super smooth. If I do them separately, the chain grinds until I do the second click. When I shift from the big to the little, it only takes one click (and it's smooth).
