That's a real loss because he runs a very capable and responsive LBS.

Someone on sci.engr.mech said a chain sprocket system was over 95% efficient at transmitting power -- better than a belt drive.

I'm guessing most of the friction is between the pins and the links as they wrap around the sprocket. The friction would increase directly with rpm and with tension in the chain -- in other words, the % friction would remain constant over all power ranges.

The answer to any question beginning "why don't they" is "money".
It's much cheaper to use off-the-shelf bicycle chain drives than to adapt a belt to the cranks and rear sprocket of a bicycle drivetrain.

help putting my rear hub back together

I guess it is called a rear hub....anyway, I finally got my spoke replaced on my back wheel of my Raleigh M 30 mtn bike, But it was on the side of the hub (where the five sprockets are (it's 15 speed). So
I had to remove the sprocket so I could replace the spoke.

But now I think I have a problem.

I put the sprockets back on. I repacked the bearing on the side of the axle away from the 5 sproc

Never had a problem with this bike before, a Miyata 12 speed I bought used in like-new condition about 3 years ago. It's a basic road-commuter bike, nothing fancy, but it has a decent triple-butted frame and I've taken to daily 12 milers up in the hills (about 1000 foot elevation).

I've just had a new chain (Shimano) fitted as part of a service on my bike and it's currently skipping badly on the sprockets.

I've done 3000miles on the bike and had a change of chain at 1500miles and now a second at 3000. Both times chain wear was acceptable (this last change was prompted by a chainchecker reading of just under 75%) so I would hope that the cassette doesn't need replacing yet.

How does a Rohloff cog wear gauge work? Could I duplicate it? It looks very similar to a chain whip, even simpler, it just appears to be a single short length of new chain with one end attached to a bar.

Let's get it straight here, eh? As I understand, tire tread is the rubber that's stuck onto the casing. All tires have a tread. If you want to refer to different types, you have to modify the word, such as "smooth tread", or

I have a 15-speed ATB, and its steel rear wheel has 5 gears. I got hold of an aluminum rear wheel with 7 gears (it says Exage FH-HG50).

Would there be any problem with using the Exage wheel? I did try it, and found that I had to use a washer in order for the quick-connect to tighten up on the frame. But, on a very short ride I also found that I could not shift into the largest gear. I assume that

My 27 x 1.25" back wheel for my Miyata road bike has a 6 sprocket freewheel with 14 tooth high gear and 28 tooth low gear. The next to largest sprocket has a chipped tooth and although I found a replacement freewheel I discovered that I have a used 27 x 1.25" wheel with a 6 sprocket freewheel, but it's 14 tooth high gear and 30 tooth low gear. I'm in the final stages of building my Fixie . I'm using a 42/14 gear with 23c tires for 78.8 gear inches. I went with this beacuse I bought the 14t cog when I planned on using a 39t ring on another set of cranks
I had but, things changed. I think it should work out fine as; I ride my bike 13km to uni in one gear on the way there it is slightly up hill and

I used to use it mainy for offroad but a knee injury stopped that, and in the past few years I've used it purely for commuting (10K's to school and back, 30-40K rides on weekends, stuff like that).

I've read up on the Freewheel but keep hearing or seeing it in contrast to the cassette and am a bit confused by that. Isn't a freewheel simply a device in the hub or attached to the hub; on which a cassette is placed, and allows it to spin freely when the biker is coasting or not using the pedals?
