re:Gipiemme wheel opinions In category Tech issues Written by xmarvel I'm looking for a set of wheels and like the potential durability advantage of a triplet spoke pattern on the rear. Rather than spend big $$ on Campagnolo, I was thinking of giving the Gipiemme's that I've found on eBay a try: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36144&item=3629553885 Seems like a hybrid between the Campy and Bontrager. Any inputs on the components an
re:Weird spoke breakage In category Tech issues Written by loanercrow I'm experiencing strange spokes' breakage. Both front and rear wheels are nearly the same - 26" rims Sun Ringle DS1-XC, 14/15/14 g Nirosta SS spokes laced 3x. There is Formula hub in the front, SRAM 9.0 Disc in the rear and Magura Louise disc brakes fitted on both. I've built several wheelsets for couple of years, all of them according to common rules eg. JB's "Bicycle Wheel" book and prefer stron
Help me decide on a great commuter bike In category Tech issues Written by jellyphisher I'm in the process of trying to put together (or buy if there's one available) a great commuter/bad weather bike. I intend to use it mostly for commuting (12 miles each way in reasonably hilly terrain--takes me about 45-50 minutes), especially in rainy weather. When the weather is nice and the roads are clear, I'll probably ride my road bike instead. My 54cm Trek 5200 fits me like a glove, so I'
re:mavic ksyrium elite vs velocity spartacus pro In category Tech issues Written by bowhack I was hoping to buy a couple of mid range wheels to go with my cheapo Al-Frame and Easton EC70 fork project. I was thinking between Mavic Cosmic Elite, Mavic Ksyrium Equipe, mavic ksyrium elite or velocity spartacus pro. Especially how does ksyrium elite compare to spartacus pro? Also anybody know of a good deal on the latter 2?
re:Parking Break - What are your thoughts on this? In category Tech issues Written by thor0298 I took the kickstand off of my bike. I found that I never used it because I always lock my bike to a post or bike-rack anyway. And if I did use it, I was always at some risk that my bike would get knocked over. I always think a bike looks better without a kickstand anyway. But, when parking, it is often times a hassle getting a bike situated so it won't flop to one side or the other. Think about i
Going from the Sahara to Antarctica with a mix of spokes In category Tech issues Written by bwalker So, hypothetically, I have a trip that starts from the Sahara to Antarctica. It'll be about a week in each place, and I have a wheel that's built with titanium spokes on the drive side of my wheel, and SS spokes on the non-drive-side. Will the temperature difference cause it to go out-of-dish?
re:Four cross spokes for cross wheels? In category Tech issues Written by hypermush I've just completed the build on my first cross bike and have put cross tires on my 32 hole training wheels. These wheels are holding up fine although the fire roads in this area are a little rough on 'em. I am going to build a new set of wheels so that I don't have to switch the tires on these wheels from road to cross. And this leads to my questions. Since I'll be buying new hubs, should I g
re:Need Advice Choosing Road Wheels In category Tech issues Written by Darnn I just got a great deal on a Klein Q-Carbon. The only thing I don't like about it is the cheap wheelset. I do a lot of charity rides and don't race (usually average between 17-20 mph). I ride about 2000 miles per summer in hilly New England. I weigh 170 lbs. I'm considering three options to replace the wheels: Mavic Open Pro rims with Ultegra hubs and butted stainless spokes ($200 set) Cane Cre
Rear wheel building questions In category Tech issues Written by puddleglum I have a self-built rear wheel with Mavic CXP33 rim, 32 DT 14/15/14G spokes and a modern Campagnolo Chorus hub. The wheel has about 13 months or 6500 kilometres on it. It was the first wheel I ever built, and I built it three-cross on the right and radial on the left. It's been mostly troublefree, but I've noticed that the left-side spokes have gradually lost some of their tension. Not enough
re:Wacky wheel In category Tech issues Written by hrd2hndle I built a wheel for fun today using a 32-hole Deore hub and Weinmann rim and lacing 8 no-name SS spokes 2x on the drive side and 4 spokes radial on the non-drive side. Does this particular pattern have a name, sorta like crow's foot, etc. I did it haphazardly, and since the NDS is radial, the spokes on that side are too long (yes, one of them is very crooked), so it has 0 tension in those and th 2 Products tagged with "ss spokes"The number one name in high-quality spokes.
